What I don't quite understand is that when convenience stores were genuinely small traders, I could understand the price premium on the products. Now that the convenience market is increasingly made up of all major supermarket chains who have the economies of scale that a large supply chain brings, why do they still charge a premium in their Express/Local/Simply/Little formats?

I'm willing to bet the value of my Nectar points - just north of ?15.00 I'll have you know - that there are probably excellent reasons that economists/strident-voiced representatives of the smarks (it's what I'm calling super market chains from now on, hoping it goes what the youngfellas are calling virulent) who'll justify the premium prices in their teeny-tiny-cute-as-a-bugs-ear Mom 'n' Pop stores because of Keynes and his aggressive demands or whatnot, all the while curdling the milk in my muesli of a morning, as I wonder aloud at my BOSE radio if their mothers are proud of them.

I'll of course ignore their blandishments and stick with the 'shower of bastards attempting to put out of business the actual independent local shops who started the model of long opening hours where we expected to pay a premium because that was only fair and you knew the family running the place and didn't begrudge them a farthing of it' theory.

The Nectar card? Yes I know.

    • Hussein and his team have just finished painting our main reception room, kitchen and hallway throughout the house. We also threw a few extra curve balls in while we were away like painting the front door, garden walls and helping fit some new lights. Hussein is a pleasure to deal with: professional, diligent, trust worthy, flexible and a really nice bloke. This is the second time we have worked with him and will definitely do so again.
