Another excellent article from Jim Waterson's London Centric reporting

https://www.londoncentric.media/p/kitchen-foil-and-algerian-markets?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Interesting that there seem to be favoured and repeated routes for phone snatching for particular thieves.  Seems ED might be one of them ☹️

Thanks very much for that.   I think the better informed we are, the better our discussions will be.

The article contained: "That arrest had quite an impact on the [phone theft] numbers for the following month,” said Green.

Here's another indicator, admittedly a piece of police PR,  of how well-targeted police efforts, mostly invisible to us,  can when successful  seriously affect offending figures: https://news.met.police.uk/news/met-police-drive-down-theft-and-robbery-by-84-percent-in-battersea-and-nine-elms-500495.

The BBC File on 4 programme has been reporting on the phone theft industry this week.  Apparently there's a large market in Shenzhen where wiped stolen mobiles can be got for up to a few hundred pounds.

The programme highlights a major trigger for phone thefts: immediate access, on unlocked or shoulder-surfed phones, to their loaded financial account apps and data.  Accounts can be cleaned out even before the victim has reported the theft.  Locked phones can take longer.

Pickpocketing and distraction thefts (eg, at a table in cafe or pub with phone on table, being oddly engaged by stranger) are available as alternatives to snatches.

They end up all over the world.  There is a part of china where there is a massive recycling industry.  I wish I could recall the article as it had percentages, the west, and South America, being pretty low as final destination.  Not sure how many get sold on in country of origin/ownership

I know someone who had his phone snatched from him on the tube. It was reported found as the thief had just thrown it away as it was so old. It wasn't that old.

I've also had kids ask me the time before just so they could laugh at me with my old phone.

Maybe we bring it on ourselves.

    • You are not the only one. I visited GM's Hair Salon last Sunday and had possibly the worst haircut of my life. It began badly when the stylist didn't mix the dye correctly so it wasn't colouring my hair uniformly. Instead of stopping to fix this she went straight into the cutting. I was very clear in telling her that I didn't want my hair cut too short but she ignored this instruction, attacking my hair with the clippers without once stopping to check if I was happy. She had a particular problem getting the sides of equal length but she just kept on cutting making both sides far too short. I asked her to comb my hair backwards but she combed it forward. I asked her to cut my hair at the back in a point but she ignored me again and did the opposite. The fringe at the front wasn't straight either. As if all this wasn't bad enough she didn't use a cutting collar so I got hairs all down my back and she cut my right ear (twice) and I left the salon wearing a bandage. The salon didn't seem too busy when I visited – staff outnumbered clients – so I don't understand why an employee with no idea how to cut short hair, inexperience with clippers and unable to follow instructions was allowed to work on me. An apology or a refund for a visibly atrocious haircut would have been welcome but neither was forthcoming. I will never set foot in GM's Hair Salon again.
    • If it’s not their responsibility then it’s not their responsibility. If it’s that of one of the properties on that parade, that property own must take action.
    • Disappointed with all this negativity. I do occasional favours for mates or neighbours,  I sometimes charge a modest amount.  I know my capabilities, and those accepting my help understand too.  They may at times repay the favour.  To date I have not stolen anything, set anything alight or molested anyone.  Everything I do is within the relevant regulations eg I would move a plug socket hut not rewire the house. It's what people have done no doubt for 1000s of years. I do not compete with builders.  My usual response eg following requests on the street Whatsapp is to advise that much of jobs should be a simple DIY. I'm surprised how many house holders have so little experience, more so as the millennials move in. The Lets scheme is highly regulated. Meanwhile some of us may let a casual worker into our home, perhaps cash in hand, without checking their credentials.  There is still a considerable black market out there.  What I do is so little time, I'm not depriving professionals of serious business.  A contact who asked me to repaint her buy to let was told a clear no.
