Please recommend Chinese restaurant for family birthday

Hi

Please can anyone recommend a local (preferably East Dulwich) Chinese restaurant for a family birthday dinner this Sunday, open early evening?

My 70 year old parents, and two small children will be there so the food needs to be fairly 'traditional' Chinese, i.e. not too demanding- crispy duck is a necessity!

We usually get takeaway from Mr Liu and would be happy to go there but I'm not sure if the restaurant itself is a bit shabby? I haven't actually entered there for a good while. Has anyone had a sit down meal in there recently?

Many thanks.

I think Mr Liu is actually the only Chinese restaurant in East Dulwich, except for Cafe Noodle.

If you want something slightly nicer within easy reach, the only one I can think of is Dragon Castle (E&C end of Walworth Rd). They definitely have the familiar stuff, crispy duck, crispy shredded beef, etc, as well as some actual Chinese food.

The massive Chinese restaurant on the Old Kent Road (maybe the New Kent Road) is brilliant and very reasonably priced, plus does dim sum for lunch. Can't remember the name of it but am sure someone else will?? It has a few parking spaces on the forecourt.
You're better off going to Buddha Jazz on Grove Lane, nr Denmark Hill station. It's Vietnamese and Chinese food and they do great crispy duck. It's much nicer than any of the Chinese restaurants in the area, including Dragon Castle. The only exception is Silk Road in Camberwell but it's very canteeny so not great for an event like this. Their food is also v spicy.

The place on OKR is called Hong Kong City and is indeed very good, both for dim sum and for dinner, and effectively has two menus, one for Brits with all the old favourites, and one for Chinese folks or others who want something a bit more adventurous. From the latter menu I can recommend the braised belly pork in hotpot with preserved vegetables.

For a special occasion I'd go to Royal China in Canary Wharf, but not really local.

I went there the other day to pick up a take away. It had been closed down on the spot by environmental health. Was rather shocked as had only been there the week before for a TA

No mate, Dragon Castle is on Walworth Road! The place I was thinking of is Shu Castle : http://www.shucastle.co.uk/

But the menu looks mainly Sichuan, so would not meet the OP's requirements.

You probably haven't heard of Tse Restaurant in Forest Hill, just before Forest Hill Station. I'm a Malaysian Chinese and I've tried so many Chinese restaurant mentioned above and nothing compared to this except Royal China as DaveR quoted. You have to try Tse, their crispy duck is SO SO SO good! Just a little info for you, they do buffet on Sunday from 1-5 but you may order any dishes off their menu. Use Sainsburys car park if you are driving. Oh! ring them to reserve a table.

    • Niko was recommended to me through a group chat for my road, where everybody raves about him. I soon realised why as he did an amazing job installing an outdoor tap for me. I needed it done quickly but had a hectic schedule, and Niko did everything possible to accommodate this, bringing the parts and working late on a Friday, having worked out the best solution for my maze of pipes. The tap looks great and works amazingly with good pressure. He made minimal mess and cleaned everything up, and charged me a very competitive price. On top of that he is delightful to chat to and willing to give advice on other matters. He’s a lovely man and will be my go-to for any issues in the future! Recommend to anybody in the Dulwich/ Peckham/Camberwell area!!
    • We've used Aria a couple of times - this time a tap that was causing water hammer elsewhere in the house, he replaced it and checked all was well. He was prompt, quick in his work, and charged what he said he would. Will use him again.
    • Hi I found a phone on the pavement near the bus stop half way up lordship lane opposite M&S and have handed into one of the estate agents there (KFH). Please call in there if you have lost it.
