Should Rachel Reeves target offshore ownership of residential properties?

Recommended Posts

There is a case to be made for Rachel Reeves  increasing taxes in this area  whilst also closing some of the loopholes. She has a free hand as offshore companies don't have a vote in a general election.

There are about 65,000 medium to high value residential properties in the UK that are owned by offshore companies. In the majority of cases the reason for this is primarily tax avoidance.

Offshore ownership has distinct tax advantages in relation to Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT). A similar situation exists with Inheritance Tax. But significantly also, it protects assets from local creditors, lawsuits, or bankruptcy proceedings.

Where such property is rented out then there are also tax advantages such as offsetting mortgage interest and other items. Then there's corporation tax of 25% compared to 40% for a private  individual in the higher tax band.

Not forgetting that the proceeds of crime are accumulated in offshore trusts and companies.

The worry is that if you target rich people (a) it doesn't generate a lot of revenue as numbers are relatively small it (b) supposedly drives away investors in the UK economy.

Obviously for the reasons above it is the right thing to do on principle.

The other way round I was vaguely involved many years ago in work looking at how big companies were shifting profit into offshore accounts, the usual suspects BVI, Bermuda and the like.

And there's those that argue that is the nature of things to support our pension funds and investments and make the UK an attractive place to manage your money.

Sure, let's go for "offshore" owners of any kind of business too whilst we're at it.

We're an island. We don't need money from offshore criminals.

We can all live on benefits and go on strike when when the onshore government wages the job centre pays are too low .

    • Malumbu, that's great that you are so helpful and honest, but sadly not everybody around is. And some of us are crap at DIY and would be better off not attempting most of it.  I can wire a plug, unblock a u-bend and paint a wall,  but that's about it. Mind you some of the people I have paid didn't seem to be much better, unfortunately. Can you say more about the LETS scheme? Who regulates it, and how?
    • You are not the only one. I visited GM's Hair Salon last Sunday and had possibly the worst haircut of my life. It began badly when the stylist didn't mix the dye correctly so it wasn't colouring my hair uniformly. Instead of stopping to fix this she went straight into the cutting. I was very clear in telling her that I didn't want my hair cut too short but she ignored this instruction, attacking my hair with the clippers without once stopping to check if I was happy. She had a particular problem getting the sides of equal length but she just kept on cutting making both sides far too short. I asked her to comb my hair backwards but she combed it forward. I asked her to cut my hair at the back in a point but she ignored me again and did the opposite. The fringe at the front wasn't straight either. As if all this wasn't bad enough she didn't use a cutting collar so I got hairs all down my back and she cut my right ear (twice) and I left the salon wearing a bandage. The salon didn't seem too busy when I visited – staff outnumbered clients – so I don't understand why an employee with no idea how to cut short hair, inexperience with clippers and unable to follow instructions was allowed to work on me. An apology or a refund for a visibly atrocious haircut would have been welcome but neither was forthcoming. I will never set foot in GM's Hair Salon again.
    • If it’s not their responsibility then it’s not their responsibility. If it’s that of one of the properties on that parade, that property own must take action.
