On Oct 18th we have one 3 hour ride to “hidden gem” Charlton House and a longer 4 hour ride, one of our regular favourites, to Trinity Buoy Wharf and beyond.
Charlton House is one of the finest surviving Jacobean manor houses in England. With free entry you can explore the panelled rooms. and the walled gardens and get refreshments in Frillys Tea Room.  Ride starts from Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre) at 10am on a 13-mile route planning to finish in 3 hours. Bruce leading. Outward leg quiet streets and Cycleway 4 to Greenwich, then on to Greenwich Park. Up the hill, exit to Vanbrugh Park, through Blackheath Standard and more road to Charlton House. Break there to look at the house and/or get a coffee. Return through Charlton Park, past Charlton Lido and on to Sun in the Sands underpass and quiet streets to Blackheath. Cross the Heath to the SW corner then down Morden hill to Elverson Rd DLR Station. Cross to Brookmill Park, ride through Deptford and rejoin the outward route at Folkestone Gardens. If time continue on C10 and the Canal Path back to Peckham Square. If pushed for time just retrace the outward route. Report with photos from last year’s ride at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-9th-nov-2024/.
Start/finish Southwark Needle, south side London Bridge, 9.30am. NOTE EARLY START. Amanda leading and aiming to finish before 1.30pm. We subtitled this ride the first time we did it in 2018 “The New, The Old and The Derelict”. There is now less of the derelict and more of the new and the route changes to reflect this. Set off to Canary Wharf, then a loop for Trinity where will have a stop with time for a look round. Then on to Barrier Park North and the Royal Docks and back to London Bridge. About 15 miles.  For those of you who have not visited Trinity Buoy Wharf, try to get on this ride. Completely unique site with 2 decent cafes and some interesting art. Plus the history related to Trinity House and Michael Faraday.  Report from last year’s ride at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-19th-oct-2024/.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/
Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/Future/provisional ride ideas can be viewed on our planning spreadsheet.
