Milk delivery

Does anyone on here have one?  I’ve found one - Modern Milkman - that is offering 50% off for the first two weeks plus a complementary milk hut.  They sell different non dairy items plus bread, jam, eggs and other items.

We get milk from milk and more. Reasonably happy.  

Milk and orange juice in returnable bottles.

I always feel we lost something amazing when we moved away from home milk delivery with glass bottles using electric floats to driving to supermarkets and buying milk in plastic bottles.

Hindsight says we should have valued the good old milky more

Yep, I hear you. Been waiting for modern milkman to these parts and plan to try them out. I still remember Dennis, our Egg-man, from my childhood, who used to deliver dozens in his Citroen 2C and came to collect the boxes the following week. Happy Days.

Off topic, but when I was a kid in Streatham, long ago, apart from the milkman (rarely if ever milkwoman),  who also delivered yoghurt - very exotic - in little glass jars, we also had regular deliveries of coal, bread and cheesecakes (not the kind we know now, they had coconut on top), fruit and veg,  and paraffin (both pink and blue).

I'm not entirely sure we have lost "something amazing" by buying milk in shops.

The glass bottles were left on the doorstep and the metallic tops were pecked through by birds getting at the cream/milk.

Or else the bottles were nicked. 

And then there was the rag and bone man.... bell and horse and cart, just like Steptoe.

God I'm old.

We didn't have supermarket deliveries. We didn't have supermarkets. I remember the first supermarket opening in Streatham. It  was quite amazing having to walk round and  put your own shopping in a basket.

Of course you also had lot's of local diaries. My grandmother had a job as a milkmaid in Camberwell when she was young!

Based on what I’ve seen, you can get yogurt in small glass jars from milkman now if you miss those.  Butter and bread is also available.  One of the dairies has fresh bread from a bakery in Brockley, but that bakery also do their own deliveries which I had been thinking of trying.

I miss milkmen. It was the sign of a good night out if you met one on the way home.

But could quality produce, in 100% recyclable packaging and home-delivered by zero emission electric vehicles really catch on these days?

They should bring back the Corona pop man, as well.

The yoghurt was very sharp (not sure of right word) and  if memory serves quite runny.

Nothing like the stuff sold now. There was pink as well. Strawberry? That must have had sugar in?

Too new fangled for us, but my Auntie Grace down the road used to get it 😂

There was quite an old clip on BBC4 recently where they were introducing yoghurt to the British public. They called it a 'Balkan Dairy Preparation', which sounded to me more like something you'd ask to speak to the male member of staff about in the chemist in those days.

Enjoying the nostalgia and memories. 

As with others, we get ours through Milk and More (is part of big co, so there is that against it, but it's hardly a secret/niche thing) - returnable glass bottles of milk, orange juice, yoghurt, and much more besides (as per the name).

And yes it comes in the middle of the night in an electric vehicle. So can still get out nostalgia fix, doubled when the Riverford chap comes too.

Another shout out for Milk & More - their app allows you to alter the order, add or subtract to it and also to schedule holiday stops without having to leave messages in bottle - so more secure. You do have to set up a direct debit with them, but I haven't had any problems with that myself. I have had one or two missed or late deliveries in several years, but not really a problem - only very occasional and caused mainly by delivery-person illness. And very much feels like an old-fashioned milk delivery. They do special seasonal offers as well. More expensive than the cheapest of the super market milk prices, but for that its at your door, fresh and no bother.

Have used Milk and More for years. When the price went up we cancelled a couple of pints but we still have 8 pints a week. If we are expecting family etc we buy from Sainsburys to top up.

We kept on with M & M as if weather bad we could order extra stuff from them to save us a trip to Sainsburys Local. Also gives employment to our milkman.
