Might have left the job but says very little about agency management.. surely most companies have a hand over or would at least check that all was  in place… how long does it take to just look at e mails to see everything has been done? Hoping this is not for real as I thought this agency was long established in the area…Buck stops with manager of rental department or Manager is overall charge.. Everyone likes to pass the buck on - own up, put your hands up, everyone makes mistakes…

1. Will the tenant demand a refund of the rent paid - as they are entitled to do?
2. Will Southwark impose a fine?
3. If there is a fine, who will pay it Landlord or letting agent?
4. Will Reeves' name appear on the Southwark rogue land land on-line register?
5. If the rent is forfeited, who pays it back to the tenant - LL or Letting Agent.

This story will run for some time yet.

Would think a lot of people care - tenants and landlords sine bill has been passed like I said either last week or this giving , I understand Tenants more rights.

What Rachel has done highlights issues - and certainly I would have thought, impact on folks lucky  enough to have properties around Dulwich or wherever paying agents a fee to a tenant for their property and/or also manage.

Most agents I know belong to ARLA whatever they are called and have a code of conduct that they have to follow.

Also it seems the PM is a bit annoyed that Rachel Reeves' story changed/amended within 24 hours.

And this is why the public cares (well except those who will turn a blind eye to anything their chosen political party does). People were so sick of the lies and nonsense the Tories thrust upon us that they wanted a government that they could trust, that played by the rules. When senior members of that government do not do that it undermines trust in the established political parties at a time when the scariest political party is gaining momentum for not being either Labour or the Tories and, ironically, pitching themselves on the basis of trust.

I expect that scores of landlords are unaware or made mistakes in this territory.  And this is not just the Chancellor but a married couple.  It feels like you and others are taking joy in demonising her.

The only question would be is the house suitable for renting out?  I expect it is, and if not that is up to Southwark to take action rather than keyboard warriors.  The only surprises are the expense of licensing - surely time for a thread on "is licensing a money maker for local authorities?".  I'm being facetious.  And that the cost of rental, which feels fairly reasonable based on this area.

By all means go after rogue landlords.  Be my guest.  I was horrified to see some of the properties rented in London and beyond by family members.  Not all bad.

Oh and another question.  Haven't I got better things to do than comment on this 'no story here' thread?  😁

Yes it's a witch hunt, but that's what the press does. Optics are almost more important than policy these days. If the public has even a whiff that a government isn't trustworthy, or is chaotic, that feeling lingers like a rotten smell. 

It's another comms catastrophe for Labour - every time there's a story they rush out a knee-jerk denial, without verifying the facts. They did it with Raynor and it was a shit-show. That's what Labour keeps getting wrong. Reeves should have been gagged and told by someone with an ounce of sense to first check her emails.

No such thing as a “witch hunt” against a taxpayer funded public figure. Especially someone in charge of finances. 
 

It is the responsibility of a landlord to ensure the agent acting on their behalf has done everything required to validate a tenancy. And to double check that too. Stop justifying it as some sort of ‘oversight’ purely down to the agent. 
 

Also, I’d question the socialist credentials of a Labour chancellor owning a beautiful detached house on a private estate close to the edge of Dulwich Village. Great Brownings, according to some media outlets. What a s**tshow.

Absolutely. It's a disaster. And for this government, who were happy to tell us they had 14 years to prepare to lead, it has been one self-inflicted disaster after another since they took over. To be honest the signs were there when they were in opposition but I think we all gave them the benefit of the doubt as they weren't the Tories and now they have the reigns the additional scrutiny that brings is tripping them up.
