Sue the outline of the whole plant is similar to verbena bonariensis.

The square shaped stems should be a clue.

The petals look like they might be papery like an "everlasting" flower - are they?

I don't have time, but there are plant ID websites online, you can go through step by step (type of leaf, type of stem, type of flower, colour etc) and hopefully at least reduce the options a bit?

ETA: Thanks re the outline. I have no idea at all what it is (and I've worked in two plant centres specialising in unusual plants - but then my memory is crap so I probably wouldn't recognise anything these days!!!)

Ah, thanks, I was thinking of statice, but I googled it as statys and then couldn't find it!

The flowers are quite different here, though, aren't they?

The stem is very similar to a Verbena bonariensis, the same squareness and legginess. But obviously leaves and flowers quite different too.

InTexas, good thinking :)

raasaygirl, definitely, that's the one, well done. Wee quinnie got the plant off my wall in Crystal Palace Road and I had labelled it as Ammi majus which is a beautiful plant, quite different to this one. I bought the seeds from seeds.com and they have obviously labelled them wrongly but seeing the name for this one, ammobium grandiflorum I can kind of see how the mistake happened. Problem was I planted 30 of them all over my garden before I realised the mistake. They're nice, but not that nice. Thanks for solving the mystery.

Ammi majus does look a much nicer plant!

By the way , the South London Botanical Institute (Norwood Road) is a great place for help with identifying plants, especially wild or native species. Its open every Thursday. There's a herbarium (dried plant collection)which includes every British plant.

    • Found debit card on Colyton Road - around 5:30pm. PM with your name and the last 4 digits of the card number if you think it might be yours.  Reported to the bank who asked me to shred it. If you are the owner, they'll send a new one in the post
    • Yet to use it for a big parcel, but worth a try!
    • This guy was found running loose on the common, up at the Colyton Road end. He was being quite over zealous with other dogs, causing a bit of mayhem. No collar, we think he might be a pup who's escaped. If he's yours, PM me and I can put you in touch with a kind young couple who got a lead on him and have put shout-outs on the local dog whatsapp groups.  If you are the parents of any of the young lads in school uniform, who were helping me as I tried to stop a fight kicking off between this chap and my dog, please tell your sons thank you. I really thought it was going to get nasty and I didn't get the chance to thank the boys - particularly the blonde one - who were helping me. He was being very brave as I crumbled.    The dog's owner has now been found. But hopefully the parents of the young lads will see this post.
