In many places it's the businesses of the area who pay for Christmas lights. (That was the sound of LL businesses falling to the ground in a faint at the suggestion)

The Christmas tree in Dulwich Square was paid for by a crowdfunder

Though it's often the big corporates who dig deepest. For small independents that's a bigger ask, decorating, when they do their own premises is cost enough. And we're normally happy not to have the big corporates in LL.

That's certainly the narrative that runs ad infinitum on the Forum but I wonder how true it is. Speaking for myself I'm very happy M&S, Superdrug, Pret and, in the last century, Sainsbury's arrived and judging from the business they do I'm not alone.

You need to get your collecting tin out.  Here in Forest Hill we have a very smartly decorated Christmas tree,  funded mainly by local traders.

Where exactly would an East Dulwich Christmas tree sensibly go ?

Only possible place is the middle of the goose green roundabout

Could just decorate the palm tree on the middle of the roundabout. There are palm trees in Bethlehem, and palms symbolize Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Some accounts (in the Quran for example) even have Mary giving birth to Jesus leaning against / sitting under a palm tree.

Some gorilla Xmassing of our holy roundabout palm tree might be fun.

How about on the newly paved Melbourne Grove North, next the station? Or have something with lights on Goose Green?

This is a great idea. Just some lights on the palm could look fantastic.

The palm was once decorated with Hamlet scarves, I seem to recall.

And there has been a small Christmas tree on Goose Green some years. I think it was connected with a primary school?

Sorry! What's more Christmassy, a Guerilla or a Gorilla?

I'm sorry too....

Completely off topic, but Facebook used to show me loads of stuff about baby elephants.

Now it shows me loads of stuff about baby gorillas.

And now I've got bloody gorillas on the ED Forum 😭

    • I know the police have other things to do, but couldn't they move these people on and/or arrest them if they are collecting money illegally and being aggressive? Can't M&S do something?

    • "What we can unequivocally state is that the behaviours described are entirely at odds with the Dulwich college of today.” ...so says the head honcho of Dulwich College today. Obviously actions speak louder than words in this area. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/dec/11/dulwich-college-head-responds-to-claims-of-teenage-racism-by-nigel-farage
    • Also endorse Niko! We had a mystery leak which he came round and identified as the dishwasher. After John Lewis came round and failed to install the new one due to a tricky door on the old integrated machine, Niko came back and had the new one cleanly installed and with the door on with no trouble at all. He was friendly, explained his process and transparent (and reasonable) on pricing. Hugely recommend him and will continue to use him when any issues crop up!
