Dangerous temporary bollard on Nairne Grove

Any cyclist using Nairne Grove should have noticed the dangerous school streets bollard which was missing its metal cover, leaving it extremely dangerous to cyclists due to its ridiculous location on the corner.

I'm amazed it hadn't been dealt with before but I reported it to the Council and within a few days it was sorted.

As someone who broke a bone in a fall onto tarmac not long ago, I hope no one was injured in the meantime. 

In future anyone can easily report dangerous road defects using:

Does that apply for other walks of life too? If you drove into a pothole and wrote off your car wheel, would you be happy if the council told you to slow down and take a bit more care? If you were walking along the pavement and tripped on a cracked and uneven paving slab, it'd be fine for the ambulance service to tell you to stop wasting their time and you should have just looked where you were going? If a wheelchair user fell down an unguarded open manhole cover, perhaps you'd be first on scene looking down at them and saying it's their own fault for not slowing down a bit?

Or would you think that's it's not unreasonable that a public space should be maintained to a basic standard of safety?

That's one of the most crassly stupid comments I've read on here and it's up against some really quite stiff competition!

It's cyclists that have all the problems. This whole thread is dedicated to them. Ergo, it's cyclists that should be less reckless. 

If you want to moan about the council not looking after other people, there will be other threads for that.

Besides, all the bollards on Nairne Grove are either on the pavement or on traffic islands.

Cyclists who are travelling at a reasonable speed, and riding safely rather than wantonly, shouldn't be any where near the bollards.

Nairne Grove has a school street - with two collapsible bollards in the road at one end. Perhaps you should rethink the post above @CPR Dave?

That bollard is clearly on the footpath.

Looks like a cyclist may well have collided with it though.

No, the original post is about the collapsible School Street bollards that are flush in the road - see the photo.

Are you talking about the two gray strips on the floor? There's plenty of space for a bicycle to avoid those assuming it was being ridden safely and with all due care and attention for a vehicle turning into a side road and, more importantly, turning into a school street.

 

I can't see anything to complain about here for a careful cyclist.

@CPR Dave it is a bit late to point this out perhaps, but the collapsible bollards are covered with metal strips which became damaged (not in that old pic above), detaching the left hand one. This is not where a rider would be looking in the dark as they round that corner, for example. Esp if they are unfamiliar with the area. 

I'm glad it has been repaired and now when you go for a ride you will be that little bit safer.
