Looking for suggestions for good restaurants that allow BYO.

Chern Thai still allow byo even though they are now licensed. Also, Thai Corner Cafe. Or non-thai, Persepolis in Peckham. Also, I believe Hanar in Peckham still allow byo. Note that there will be a corkage charge. The suggestion of Amrutha above has no corkage, excellent food and good service when I visited the Earlsfield branch. Plus you can take home leftovers.

@Sue

that makes sense as its pretty tiny for eat in..we live down the road so can get lucky with walk-ins.

Their phone number is 0208 291 4423

here's their website

https://www.matoom.co.uk/

I just LOVE the food there

I didn't know they were on Deliveroo!

Wondering if central East Dulwich is within 2.5 miles (crosses her fingers)?

According to Google maps it's a 40 minute walk from mine, so I guess it depends how fast you walk. Will consult ChatGPT for hopefully an accurate assessment of the actual distance (or look on Deliveroo. Duh. 🤣)

ETA: Chat GPT says about 2 miles.

But I had  first uploaded a screenshot of their website with their address and  postcode on, and before I could ask my question it had come back with a rewrite of their website blurb, which it didn't have a high opinion of 🤣

@Sue I'd say you're almost certainly within 2.5 miles..

Most their buisness seems to be from Deliveroo due to the small size of the actual restaurant there's always deliver drivers waiting round the corner..The good thing is the food is prepared in their kitchen for the takeaway orders not in some grim dark kitchen on an industrial estate

I just LOVE the food there

We had a delivery from Matoom last week.

Sadly, as I had high expectations, especially as it wasn't cheap, I was underwhelmed.

To start off with  positives, the corn cake starter was ok, and my partner said his green curry and coconut rice was tasty.

I  (unadventurous I know but I wanted to do a direct comparison with Chern Thai) had Pad Thai (with tofu and veg).

There was a lot of it, which was good. So much that I had half of it cold for breakfast the next morning.

However, it was almost completely noodles, with hardly any veg or tofu. In fact there was so little tofu I don't actually remember eating any.  I do remember thinking that the stirred in egg must be some kind of tofu. I'm wondering now whether they were busy and forgot the tofu altogether!

As it didn't come with peanuts (which I knew in advance as they weren't mentioned on the menu) I ordered a peanut sauce (?) separately, though I can no longer see this on the online menu. This didn't really help much taste wise

For comparison, we both had Pad Thai for lunch yesterday (Saturday) at Chern Thai, with gyoza to start.

The Pad Thai was fantastic, good sized portions with lots of tofu and several different kinds of  really fresh lightly cooked vegetables.

The gyoza were also excellent, just the right amount of crispiness and with a good amount of dipping sauce.

The meal  was also very well priced. I realise it's not very fair to directly compare the price of delivered dishes to dishes from  an eat-in lunch menu, but in terms of overall value it was much better.

And the service was lovely.

In case our Matoom delivery  was a one off glitch, we will book a table and eat in there, but so far I am disappointed.

ETA: Just realised this thread is about BYO. Chern Thai used to be solely BYO, but it now has a full drinks menu with Thai beer on draught and  wine.

You can still BYO, but there is a charge.

We had jasmine tea, which was very nice.

Matoom Thai on London Rd (opposite Sainsbury) Its tiny but minimalist chic decor and I've found the food to be superb.

Its by far my favourite Local (ish) Thai.

Note that Amrutha is Vegan.

Amrutha is excellent, unless you are died in the wool meat and two veg most will find the food to their taste and it certainly isn't a place that expects you to be a sandal wearing vegan.

Recommend Matoon too, there are many great places in SE23, SE4 and SE26 if you get chance to get on a bus.

Don't have takeaways very often and would only do this when they employ their own delivery people due to all the issues with the slave labour that is Deliveroo and the like (and numerous other issues).  Yes it is a different thread but I can't stop myself reminding people.

    • It's about ensuring it's the medical facilities you are accessing, hence the sign-in actually in Tessa Jowell. And I think there are visual as well as camera checks, after all a number of people drive in and out of the car park to drop patients off. Clearly they are not parked up, so it's not relevant if they are fleetingly on camera. It's only those actually parked who need to identify themselves as patients.
    • Thanks CPR Dave for the link to Southwark's leaf cleaning schedule. Good to see that.   I think that what may have happened was the leaves weren't cleared during the scheduled week for Whateley Road, which was w/c 17 November.  Then they were cleared a couple of weeks ago instead. We have been here through all of autumn,  and there has been a steady build-up of leaves on this stretch since October.  At one point there was a deep layer to wade through. The photos I posted were from 17 December, and as you can see,  the leaves had been trampled and compressed into the ground. It looked a lot worse at times.   Lots of school kids from the primary school walk up and down this pavement.   In case this happens next year,  I have found a contact page about streets https://www.southwark.gov.uk/parking-streets-and-transport/contact-us-about-transport-and-roads - so I could ask them what their plans are.

    • Hopefully we were just unlucky and it was a one off glitch.
