Only a few years ago I was rather annoyed about the lack of live music in ED.

What a change a few years makes, there is now regular live music in, The Great Exhibition, House of Tippler, Flying Pig and last night there was live music in the EDT from a band comprised of a few Dads from Goodrich School. There are probably others too.

Its quite a turnaround in a relatively short time. Great stuff.

Whilst there have always been organised live music, pay to get in basis/separate room/venue, its a real bonus to have free live music in the corner of the pub/bar when you are out for a beer. Well done to all thos venues for supplying the entertainment, definitley creates a good atmosphere.

yes, well said. I was considering moving a few years ago because there was just nothing, now we have venues and (i.e.) the folk club, all showing good stuff. I was in the GE on Wed for a beer and some dude was knocking-out barroom piano, was great sound. I get impression GE definitely likes their music to be 'background', also was there last Friday and a couple of guys were spinning some excellent soul and funk vinyl.

I think the GE had to tone down their music a bit after some noise issues some time back.

and an extension to opening hours was opposed.

The Dulwich Eukulele Band used to play there. They were excellent but quite noisy. Trumpet lady was good.

So hence a more subdued atmosphere these days..

Something like an events licence is no longer required if certain criteria are met. Do not know the detail but no licence no fee no licence application etc. Also smaller venues can have bands that couldn't before.

Not quite true and potentially a little misleading there unlurked - there are licences just not the entertainment licence as it once was. The type of places that do and have always had live music (places that have increased the level of interest) are those that have premises licences already which is a requirement to such establishments to have live music so I don't think you could attribute the licensing thing to what's going on in ED.

Yes the "entertainment licence" isn't much in existence now there are other restraints on places to control any ol' venue doing what they like.

I think the more identifiable reason for the increase and better choice of live events in the area is the effort many people have gone to to improve what's available. TheGooseIsOut is one example...

    • Called Tessa Jowell GP Surgery today after failing to get two repeat prescriptions from the pharmacy.  When I asked the pharmacy, I was told that they had been requested but not sent by the surgery.  After speaking to the surgery I was told that those two items were no longer on my repeat prescriptions.  I was told I would need a prescription review. Earliest date would be the 22 September.  That is utterly ridiculous.  Surely someone from the surgery should have contacted me to tell me this after requesting the repeat prescriptions two weeks ago.    Also, apparently, there is no point sending an email regarding prescriptions as they are not actioned nor replied to as I have discovered.
    • Erm... guessing it's like any service... so you can receive/be part of something relevant to you in the area where you happen to reside. You don't have to sign up but you might miss out on an excellent Tesco offer or two. 🤷‍♀️
    • https://www.stanthonysprimary.co.uk/parents/admissions/admissions-1 Both my children went to St Anthony's and I feel it is a wonderful school... very inclusive of all faiths (they learn about all religions even though it's a Catholic school) and nurturing with great pastoral care and teaching. it's a real community of families and school staff and I was very sad when my youngest left for secondary this year.
    • happy to buy, but would rather not buy a new one as only need it for a very short time (Hallowe'en). Please let me know if you have one in your cupboard that you don't use.
