Christmas and New Years are remarkable times! We eat and drink plenty and have heaps of fun. The last thing we tend to worry about is gaining a few pounds; however, once the New Year kicks in and the festivities are over, getting back physically to where we were before the holiday period can be a little tricky for some. Here are some tips to get you back into shape!

Try to evict feelings of guilt- Don?t feel bad about over indulging during the Christmas. Correct feeling states and having the right frame of mind is a huge asset when trying to get into shape. Be positive and ?simply? just get back to exercise as soon as you can!

Engage in exercise that you enjoy- This is the most prevalent factor associated with long term exercise adherence. Put in other terms, it is evident that if exercise is enjoyable it is more likely to be carried out. Thus, your exercise programme or physical activities should not be a chore, but something you enjoy to do.

Reduce processed carbohydrates- These are often low in nutrients, and contain many added toxins that our bodies are unable to deal with. To lose body fat quickly you should aim to substantially decrease or eliminate processed carbohydrates from your diet.

Detoxify the body- We all know that our bodies store fat if we have eaten excess calories, but a lot of people don?t consider the fact that if the body is toxic from a lot of processed foods and alcohol it will store fat to put these toxins somewhere as it can not detoxify it all. Our advice is to drink lots of water (2-4litres) a day, eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits low in sugar, avoid processed foods, and eat lean cuts of meat. A number of amino acids in protein powders are also beneficial for detoxification as well as other supplements like milk thistle, glutathione, psyllium husks and dandelion. You will be surprised how quickly you can lose weight when you put the right fuel in your body.

Include resistance training- Resistance training is great for increasing lean muscle tissue and burning calories.

Increase protein intake- Increasing protein (fish, egg white, chicken, turkey) intake makes your digestive chemistry work harder than it does with digesting other foods such as lettuce. This keeps you ?fuller for longer? leaving you more satisfied from each meal.

Drink water at regular intervals- Water is often overlooked as a useful tool to change our body shape for the better. Our bodies work in an aqueous solution so if we are dehydrated in any way we will be unable to train as hard, think as clearly, transport nutrients around the body or eliminate toxins and wastes as effectively.

I wish for you all a double dose of good health and wellbeing, Happy New Year.

    • Had a Red Admiral in front driveway today. Hadn't seen one for some time
    • It’s a flat fee levy payable by guests staying in hotel and hostel rooms, so added to the bill.  This already happens in Manchester and Liverpool ( I think in Liverpool it’s a percentage, so the more expensive rooms pay more). I read somewhere that Edinburgh is doing this next year? Charges of this kind are becoming common around the world. I think it absolutely makes sense for Southwark and other boroughs are bound to follow.
    • In  parts of Europe you just get charged tax at the end of your stay somewhere. Usually a couple of quid added to your bill. Most tourists are pretty happy to stump up the cost, as it's an expected expense.  I  think it's a good way to make money and remove the burden from locals.  It's for foreigners, Sue - I'm sure Londoners and brits will still be able to freely cross the borough lines without having to go through checkpoint charlie 🙂
    • It doesn't work like that. There won't be differential pricing for tourists and residents at any attractions, no checkpoints nor a requirement to carry one's papers with one at all times. A levy is put on hotels, maybe on Air B&Bs, on a bed per night basis. That cash goes to Southwark. It's pretty easy to administer.
