I have just watched a very interesting programme on TV about the bombing of the Sir Galahad and it made me wonder whether there were any war memorials in ED. I haven't been here for very long so may have missed one. Does anyone know of any?

If not perhaps the roundabout on Goose Green (hey even its even got a Falklands connection) would be a suitable place.

I have a very interesting copy of a dulwich hamlets historical programme, a labour of love by a local historian. It seems we had a number of local footie teams prior to 1914, including an East Dulwich one, but they were all pretty much wiped out by those pesky bosch machine guns.

Today we just have the one remaining team. I'll try and unearth it if anyone wants borrowage, it's a wholly sobering read.

MP - Sounds interesting reading.

I was obviously in quite a morbid mood yesterday as I was in Nunhead Cemetery for the first time and spotted some beautiful graves for New Zealand and Australian soldiers who died in WWI. The grave stones look fairly recent and are obviously carefully maintained despite the surrounding wilderness of the cemetery.

Imagine being laid to rest so far away from home. As you say - very sobering.

I never knew there was a memorial at King's and it's been my local hospital literally since I was born. The memorial at St Peter's is not well looked after, although someone has been giving it an annual lick of paint for the last couple of years or so. The ANZAC graves at Nunhead are probably looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission or the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions, especially if the gravestones have recently been replaced or repaired.

    • There’s a couple of Gov petitions going on in relation to fireworks at the moment but this one is for banning them entirely except organised displays if anyone wants to sign. This is the only sensible way forward in my view. No one should be able to let them off in gardens or anywhere like that, it’s crazy. I am surprised some of you have said it hasn’t been as bad this year. I live near DKH Saino and it’s been absolutely terrible my way for days. This petition gained about 20,000 just in the last day or so so clearly the appetite is there! https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/732559
    • I'd have thought they could use some of  their income from hiring out a large part of Brockwell Park in the summer (therefore, as I understand it, preventing local residents from using much of it) to put on a firework display there  in the autumn which might somewhat make up to those residents for the previous loss of use of the park. And also generate goodwill.
