Me TOOOOOOOOO....im praying my Thing 1 and Thing 2 t shirts arrive in time other wise I my have a breakdown!


I always get the bloody letter late so am left franticly googling for inspiration which I hope will keep my 2 happy.


My youngest wants to go as the Grim Reaper!!!! why??


Dam my poor organisational skills and lack of crafty ideas!

And after spending ?25 it comes out and it's just the crappy polyester dress, no ruby slippers and no basket (they are sold separately, but not by argos!).


Feeling robbed, and hating world feckin book day!!!

Yes, I hate it too. Totally agree it is about how creative the parents are or how much they are prepared to spend on an outfit. I've been trying really hard to convince them to go as Augustus Gloop - cushion stuffed in t-shirt and choc smeared round mouth. Both are refusing.


Now I'm working on 'just bring a book in'


Pickle, I think there may be another Harry Potter in Class 3 too - that seems to be youngest's current choice!

My three year old doesn't know this yet but he's going as Wally - from where's Wally. Easy peasy stripy red t shirt and jeans and a red bobble hat. Might try and find him some glasses! Mercifully the four yr olds school has gone all alternative and they get to wear pyjamas on Friday for the big bedtime story....! The older ones are having a sleep over, he's staying till 7.30. Totally awesome school!

Mine chosen to go as one of the princesses; the only outfit she got but she is taking her favourite book to school; I am not stressed out nor going to buy an outfit or make one; There are more important thing to worry about. I do think it is a silly thing but small children like dressing up; the oldest ones should just given the choice to bring their favourite book.

Result, youngest now going as Spiderman (yes, I know tenuous book link) but alternatives were 4 arms or acelerate from Ben 10 or (slightly worryingly) Voldemort from Harry Potter, (??? Not harry???) however have vetoed Voldemort as has not read the book (is 5) and i have refused to make the aliens from Ben 10 (did actually google and some annoying parents had done a full how to guide with helpful comments like "Yes, I do always have black fabric and ceramic paint to hand"....) oldest is Hermione again, was ready for that, hopefully Spidey still acceptable tomorrow!

I got an ELC Gruffalo onsie for my LO to be the 'Gruffalo's Child'. Size says 3-5 years. She's 4 - it barely fits! I think she'll manage for just a day. She seems quite happy with it, but look out for it in the FR Classifieds after the next growth spurt!

I'd ask the schools what else they're doing for World Book Day other than asking kids to dress up. It seems like a lazy option on their part if it isn't backed up by other activities during the day. Maybe some concerted feedback to the schools would help?


Our school aren't doing it (hurrah!!) - they're having a literacy week later in the year instead. Hopefully without dressing up - or at least hopefully the costume prices will have come down by then!!

Ok, the nightmare that I was trying to avoid is now here! where can I buy blue hairspray from....Can you believe I cant find blue afro wigs anywhere local? Whats up with these shops surely they knew a mad deranged mother would be in desperate need for such items hours before the dreaded "world Book Day" strikes...Ideas anyone?

Indeed. Fortunately she had a pair of red shows which my wife covered in glue and poured red glitter over. They came out really well and lasted at least long enough for her to arrive at school looking half decent, although most of the glitter was gone by the end of the day. I'm gutted that I never got to see her as I was out the door stupidly early to go to a conference and she wouldn't pose for a photo (having at the last minute decided that actually she'd rather be the cowardly lion!!!!).


I did come home to find my 2 year old in the dorothy dress which was miles too big for her, but she loves it.

I paid ?10 that I can't really afford on 2 Harry Potter brooms and glasses - on the excuse that they might become favourite playthings - which were all lost or broken by break time. The thing that gets me is that yes, it is a great idea to promote reading....but schools do not operate in a vacuum so all the associated branding and marketing goes crazy around this time of year. I stupidly fell for the ?10 because I fell for the line that by shelling out I was encouraging my children to read and to love books...so annoyed with myself! Next year I will do as my sister suggested and make the glasses out of pipe cleaners....

I just think the whole dressing up bit should be scrapped, and that kids should take their fave book in. I am not at all convinced that the dressing up will actually encourage any significant number of children to read.



Some would accuse me of being a grump, but these are the few that have a lot of time on their hands and possibly money to burn. This thread and facebook have proven to me that the vast majority of people just find it stressful or expensive and half the time the kids seem completely bemused by the whole affair.

      Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
