Pretty Traditional gone ...

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this has already been picked up earlier, but I was appaled to discover that Chris Pretty's greengrocer on Northcross St had closed down abruptly, after 42 years of service. I gather from the stallholder opposite that its 'something to do with the lease' but has anyone any more info?. Pretty Trad was the heart and soul of Northcross St and I can't believe its gone so fast. Any chance they will re-open in new premises? Sad there doesn't seem to be a way of telling what's happended to customers (ten years worth in my case.... )

Its a criminal shame that we loose good proper shops to property developers. It the blanding of the local shops /high street. Come to Brixton if you want to see how local families are moved out.

As larger business move in rents go up and as property prices go up property developers move in.(landlords pension funds etc)

Over the past 27 years we have lost 4 greengrocers. We live in SW2 but now cycle over to Pretties as they have by far the best veg ever.(Well we did) I once spoke to a woman who lived opposite and remarked how lucky she was to live next to the best greengrocer ever. She said she never bought there as Sainsburies were more convenient! When I asked had she ever tasted a Pretty carrot as they were the best ever she remarked "Carrots don't have much flavour.'

Strewth give me strength.

Now we are set to loose more shops. If rents continue to rise in Brixton then AC Continental will perish. They sell the same Manchego as Brindisi - but half the price. Yes Brixton where you may eat at a hundred eateries but not buy the affordable groceries to cook...that's the future...

If you are in Brixton, then what about the Sunday market there, and the market at Herne Hill, also on Sunday? You also have all those stalls during the week.

I also like the market at Oval (in the church grounds) on Saturdays with fruit and vegetables.
