If you have one and/or tree that overhangs onto the footpath, do please cut them back - and keep them cut back. It's really not fair on people who already have difficulties with walking because of age, disability or because they're taking care of children/pets etc.

If you don't do it then the council is likely to cut them back in a serviceable but not very pretty way.

I quite agree with you and put it in 'Tiny things that cause irrational rage' thread last September. As far as I know the Council does not do this unless they are reported. It is also dangerous for tall people in the dark. Having a front garden is an absolute privilege these days and responsibility should be taken for it. The Council will do this for the elderly and infirm as well- but they need to be told.

I've asked neighbours - in person or via a note (when I've not been able to talk to them face-to-face) - and they usually oblige. It's awkward, though, to knock on the door of a complete stranger - though I did that when I was stabbed just near the eye by a yucca leaf (it was dark; I'm rather tall). The house turned out to be empty.

So, if you don't own an offending tree/privet but know someone who does, let them know!

    • Thanks penguin  always wondered about that place and that’s way more info than I ever thought I would get  (used to live above a gun nut on friern road - he would tell me nothing)
    • There was a Saturday afternoon crowd of enthusiasts, and at other times the owner might have been off acquiring stock. He also repaired air guns, which he also sold. He stocked edged weapons, uniforms, including antique uniforms, air guns and ammo and starting pistols and shot. Some medals and other militaria. Quite a lot of ex service chit chat on a Saturday. I had an amateur interest, didn't deal a lot, in English pattern swords and other mainly 19th century militaria. And made some good purchases there. I'm afraid WWII and later events was the major focus of most of the regulars.
    • Did anyone actually venture in to that place? I recall it always being closed/very uninviting!
