Oh Otta, love the "plus they're both man u", I would have got slaughtered if I'd written that. Love it.

I didn't think you meant what it seemed you wrote which is why I simply asked why? I can't understand why anyone would boo their own team however crap they might be. What ratty was referring to is the inability of some England fans to be good losers and turn to violence when their team loses. I remember hearing a story from the Euros in 1988 in West Germany. Ireland beat England 1-0 which was a massive result for us. After the match a group of English 'thugs' went into a large bar which was full of Irish fans. They barged their way to the bar and made it obvious they were up for a fight. Not wanting to get involved in that sort of stuff, the Irish fans took their drinks and went out to the street to finish them. I thought it was the perfect response to the idiots who wanted to cause trouble. Thankfully most England fans are not like that. Ironically our manager was the one and only Jackie Charlton. World Cup winner.

A minority of England fans have been a national shame for a long time, but post France 98 with passport confiscations etc it's largely a thing of the past.

Didn't England win Fans of the Tournament in Portugal 2004?

I was in a Irish pub when Landsdowne road got torn up. I apologised profusely though the Irish reaction was more one of pity than disgust.

I predict [scientifcally based on my very large English breakfast this morning versus an espresso (which is all that Montalbano has in the morning)] that England will win.

Even if you allow a full milk cappuccino and a rusk, we still top Italy.

If you analyse last night's match (Sp v Holl) you will see that coffee and biscuit is trumped by coffee and bread with ham and cheese.

Told you it was scientific.

Seconds before the same moment I was cursing Hodgson's caution and backing-off approach. Both sides very defensive and hoping for the long pass or breakaway run. After other games I've seen so far it's a bit like watching 2 old men pushing each other around in a toilet.

    • This presumably hasn't been done by vandals. It's hardly a Sycamore Gap situation. So if it's been done by professionals, unless it was a mistake (unlikely) there must have been a good reason, as it would have cost money. It would perhaps have been a good idea to put a notice on the tree explaining why such drastic work was done, but usually (I think) it would be either because of disease (often not noticeable on the surface) or that the roots or branches  were endangering nearby structures. As already said, nobody on here is likely to know. The tree department in Southwark Council are helpful in my (admittedly limited) experience. Please post on here when you have found out, as I agree what's left of the tree looks pretty odd. Depending on why the work was done, possibly they intend to remove the rest as well?
    • I have a very stupid question. I want to get a SIM card to put in an old mobile as a back up,  in case despite my best efforts my mobile gets stolen and I have no way of contacting anybody quickly, eg banks. Can I just buy any old cheap pay as you go  SIM card and put say ten pounds on it and it will then be fine for years (with the phone kept charged!) even if I don't use it, or do I have to use the phone  every so often to keep the SIM card valid?
    • I hate to see trees cut down to such an unfinished state. Unless the tree is home to wildlife, an effort should be made to remove & replace. Otherwise, it's just so useless & unsightly.
    • Given the level of care in Dulwich Park, I would not expect this to be careless or unnecessary. It will grow back.
