hetty5
Hi there,I've noticed that the house we've recently moved into is missing the Victorian corbels (decorative stone brackets) under our window ledge. Just wondering if anyone knows where to purchase these - or have they used a builder who sourced and fitted them that they can recommend? Any help would be welcome as I don't think they are just for decorative purposes - I do believe they help support the heavy window ledge. I have searched on the internet and tried a few builders merchants in the area and there doesn't seem to be anything available. Please help! KidKruger
The Plough DIY store has plaster cast bits and pieces including ceiling roses and corbels. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45312-corbels-needed/#findComment-753606 Share on other sites
hetty5
Thanks KidKruger. I'll have to physically go in then I reckon - when I called them up they didn't have a clue what I was talking about! I also tried Whitten Timber and they were equally bemused. Tried both build merchants in ED too, the response I keep getting seems to be 'Gorbull, woss that then' love? Etc. (And yes, I do show them pictures of them on my phone). :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45312-corbels-needed/#findComment-753610 Share on other sites
KidKruger
Yes pop in, they have some on display and will no doubt have a catalogue/other products available to order. You can see their plaster mouldings display window a couple of shop fronts to the right of their main store. If fitting yourself (simple job), you may want to get some plaster moulding adhesive which you just mix-up with water. EPB
I suspect that the plaster corbels are for interior use only - they're unlikely to be load-bearing.Try googling Stone Corbels ..... hetty5
Thanks EPB - I did try googling it but it's not that useful sadly. Have a go and you'll see what I mean. :( Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45312-corbels-needed/#findComment-753679 Share on other sites

hetty5
Thanks for all the suggestions about Googling but I've done all this and what I need are external load-bearing stone Victorian corbels for under the window ledge. I'm not sure the places that come up on Google are that helpful I'm sorry to say. A lot of them are PVC or cosmetic or don't have the range. Although I do appreciate everyone's help on this. Now if someone can help who has actually had them sourced and fitted by a builder/or themselves that would be great.Thanks. *Please - no more google suggestions if that's okay. :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/45312-corbels-needed/#findComment-753683 Share on other sites
jimmah
Have you tried a reclamation yard? There are a few around. It will probably mean calling them up to see if they have what you are looking for. I can think of Lassco in Vauxhall and a website Salvoweb.com just off the top of my headAlso it might be worth checking that your neighbour's corbels are definitely stone, on some period houses these decorative/functional bits are sometimes just brick covered in stucco grand porch columns are an example. The brick performs the structural duty and the stucco makes it look the part. KidKruger
Sorry hetty5 I didn't read properly the bit about external (window) corbels, the plough stuff is decorative internal plaster. If you need several external corbels perhaps get someone to make a mould and cast them in concrete and paint them ?
