Green Party Garden Party

Recommended Posts

We're having a Green Garden Party on June 29th from 4 to 7pm. We hope to have Green Councillors from Lewisham, possibly Islington and maybe others! Come and eat a vegetarian picnic and talk about why people vote Green and how to get more councillors into office.

In Southwark there are 63 councillors. The Green Party got 11.92% of the vote and has zero councillors. There should be 8 Green Councillors

Greens are now 2nd only to Labour in 4 of London's boroughs

"We need to fix broken electoral system to give Londoners a voice"

The Greens are now celebrating their vote share in 4 of the city's boroughs where Greens came second only to Labour - beating the Conservatives, Lib Dems and UKIP. London Greens saw a rise in support of 50% compared with the 2010 local elections - with their vote share increasing from 4.6% 4 years ago to 6.9% in May 2014.

The results mean that the Green Party could have won 125 council seats in the capital (becoming the official opposition in 4 councils) under a proportional system - but instead the current "first past the post" method has left up to one in five voters with no representation on their local council

In Islington Labour secured just 56% of the popular vote yet they now hold 98% of the seats, with the Greens the only party offering an alternative voice on the council. The Greens polled 2nd with 19% of the vote.

In Hackney one in five also voted Green - making them the 2nd most popular party - but the ?first-past-the-post? system meant they were denied a single Green voice on the council.

A similar story emerges in Lewisham (below) where the Green Party secured 16% of the vote but just one seat on an otherwise Labour council.

In Lambeth, Greens came 2nd with 16% of the local council votes, but gained only 1 Green Councillor. The Conservatives, in third place with 15% of the vote elected 3 councillors.

Newly elected Green Party Councillor for Lewisham John Coughlin said:

"The Greens are immensely proud that we were able to double our number of councillors in London but it is disappointing that the growing support we are getting at the polls isn?t fairly converted into political seats. Unfortunately, our established politicians can continue to sit pretty and ignore any opposition views while they know that the electoral system does little to represent the views of the voting public.?

A Green Government: Fair and courageous

A Green government will have the courage to pursue responsible solutions to our social, economic and environmental crises through its commitment to fairness, citizen participation, shared responsibility, peace and environmental protection.

A Green Economy: Paying wages you can build a life on

We will create jobs by making our homes and workplaces energy-efficient; our public transport and local food networks reliable and convenient; and our energy sources affordable, renewable and resilient.

Work will pay at least a living wage - ensuring a good quality of life - with a citizen's pension providing dignified retirement. Tax contributions will match ability to pay.

To protect and support our economy, we will separate retail and investment banks and empower communities with a network of not-for-profit lenders.

We will support cooperative, diverse and resilient local economies to meet our needs while reversing the status-seeking wealth concentration that is deepening social divisions and destroying the natural world. We will regulate, tax and invest to protect workers? rights, support socially beneficial businesses and safeguard the ecosystems on which we rely.

Green Public Services: Run for people not profit

We support high-quality public services run for people not private profit. We will protect the NHS and Post Office from privatisation and return our energy, water and rail networks to public ownership. We will strengthen our education system by providing free school meals, making schools accountable to parents and abolishing tuition fees.

    • I’m in exactly the same position.  They badgered me for ages to have a water meter fitted.  I’d prevaricated simply because it’s so tedious dealing with these people but eventually gave in when the communications became increasingly frequent and aggressive and it was done in March 2023. I just assumed I’d then be charged on actual consumption but I received an email this morning with details of the latest price increase and it said, “Since your property doesn’t have a water meter, your bill is calculated in advance based on fixed rates rather than water usage”.  I’m sure they’ve realised I’d be paying much less if they billed me on actual consumption but have not gone out of their way to inform me.  Trawling through their website, for me anyway, is an unutterably tedious chore, but I think I’ll now have to work up the energy over the weekend to pick up the phone on Monday morning and have a word with them.
    • Great Service again from Andy.  Contacted him with a couple of issues with toilet cistern and shower.  He came over and sorted it all out quickly. Good advice given, reasonable charge for the jobs.  Highly recommend Andy!
    • Just seen this.  Your post was a bit unnecessary.  I was simply responding to the previous post that children should be cycling on the pavement. But as you say I know shed loads about transport.  Not to the depths that some go down to the minutia.  Some call me the space cowboy.  Some call me the gangster of love.  I think of myself as the people's poet.  You have to laugh at yourself. Echoing what DKH said, we weren't there, you don't know the parent was making a snide remark, My favourite Dulwich parent story was a few years ago were friends when we were in the Herne garden a few years ago, who let their children run riot.  Bless.  One decided to turn the hose on spraying some poor drinkers.  Now most of us would be mortified, but the friends welcomed their child's creativity.
