Events at Harris Girls' Academy this week

Recommended Posts

Hi all

We've got some great events in this week's East Dulwich Literary Festival. All events start at 7.30pm, and tickets are a bargain at ?2.50, and available on the door (or in advance from Rye Books).

Tonight: A tealk on Muriel Spark's surreal early novel 'The Ballad of Peckham Rye' by her official biographer, Professor Martin Stannard

Wednesday: Author Evie Wyld (proprietor of the Review Bookshop in Peckham) will be talking about her award-winning novels. Alongside her, we welcome 'The Bookshop Band', who are fresh from Glastonbury and will be performing a set of songs based around novels.

Thursday: A one-man performance by Charles Dickens' great great grandson. Two one-act pieces, 'Mr Dickens is Coming!' about the great man himself, and 'Doctor Marigold' based upon a lesser known short story by Dickens.

We would love to see you there! Email me on [email protected] if you have any questions.

    • I know people won’t have any sympathy but the SEND challenge was brought up when taxing parents who have opted for independent school to meet a child’s SEND needs. Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
