Small pond needs cleaning

Recommended Posts

Looking for someone with the materials and knowledge to empty a small pond, clean it and either refill it or advise us how to get it back to a clean pond state (avoiding complete takeover by algae etc). There's no precious life to be preserved besides 2-3 plants and some newts that we have a bowl for. Please reply or PM if you can do this or know someone who can.. thanks!

I expect it is just has excess nutrients, get some long washing up gloves on and reach down to pull up any decaying leaves etc which have sunk to the bottom, leave them on the side of the pool overnight for all the wildlife to crawl back into the water then it will make a good fertilizer for your flower beds.

Then you can pick up a small bundle of straw from a garden centre or the internet and chuck it in to soak up the remaining nutrients in the water, and after a couple of weeks it will be clear as crystal.

finally remember not to refill with tap water.

Thanks for the advice, I ended up doing it myself. Too many solids in there to filter it so I emptied the whole pond, separating solids and water and saving the newts and the nicest plants. Refilled it with tap water and now letting it rest for a while before I put some plants in and eventually the newts. Fingers crossed. Will never let is get as bad as it was when we moved in. Love the tip about the straw! Will use that for maintenance. Will also keep Gary's number in case I can't get the pond to "live" again.

These make the grass look ‘messy’. Similarly, they don’t like my policy of leaving the tree leaves where they lie on the grass verge - hence chopping the overhanging branches. It’s like living in the 1950s. My neighbours have three gardeners with leaf blowers who come twice weekly to remove every leaf from their front lawns. Their grass is cut weekly and all the  cuttings put in multiple brown bins. It’s an outdated mindset of the moneyed classes in my view. But sadly, I’m very much in the minority.
