Destroying an old computer

Can anyone recommend an individual or organisation locally who can put the proverbial sledge hammer through our old computer and provide us with a certificate confirming that they've destroyed it?

The hard drive is the only bit you need to worry about. You could always just remove it and smash the crap out of it with a hammer (or powertool)? That should make sure all your por personal data is impossible to retreive.

My son and I dismantled my old iMac. It was good fun.. As Jeremy says, just whack the heck out of the HD with a hammer and give yourself a certificate.

Drilling several holes right through the platter is probably easier than the hammer method.

Or cut in half with an angle grinder.

Or give your local mechanic/metalworker ?20 to melt it with a welding torch.

Rather than resort to these daft measures simply download a tool called Kill Disk, it will overwrite all of the disc with xxx's and ooo's rendering the files unrecoverable, this disk is used by government agencies.

This way you still have a useable hard disc.
