I'm facing having to take the kids on holiday on my own for 1 or 2 weeks at the end of August as hubby has other commitments. Anyone got any good ideas where to go with 2 girls age 6 and 8?

I did think of Butlins for the convenience of everything to hand but not sure if I'd regret it once the kids are in bed and not feel like I've had a break. I don't want to spend a fortune somewhere like Centre Parcs or go somewhere that I have to drive out to activities every day. I kind of have a concept of me and the kids just hanging out together, having some quality mum and girls time. But I'm also aware of the reality of 2 kids on holiday! Also aware that it's late in the day and lots of stuff will be booked up for the hols.

Anyone got inspiration for me?

Why not break it up a bit, day trips in London, a bit of a stay somewhere like Brighton or take those far flung friends and relatives up on offers to put you up for a visit. If you go on a full on proper hol then every day you are going to be on your lonesome every night. Or hook up with some of your local friends and see if they keen to do a few nights somewhere. I did much of the summer on my own a couple of years ago, had a friend with one child stay for one week and just did loads of day trips other times with my brood of 3 and stayed over with relatives. It's tough but manageable. I think with children and prices you just need to be realistic re what's feasible and enjoy your time together.

Esme - Court Farm is good, we went there a few years ago. But from what I remember, there wasn't much local - you had to jump in the car most days. Did the local newsagent/grocers shut - I think it was meant to the summer we went, which would have changed things for us.

Scotch - yes, worried Butlins may be overkill for a week.

The kids like having other kids around but not too frantic. I'm thinking maybe a good static caravan park on the coast/near a village might work. Camping may be too much like hard work on my own.

What about somewhere like forge wood (just near tonbridge wells). Although it is camping there is a place where you can buy breakfast and a place where you can buy dinner. They also offer childrens activities which you can book them on to give yourself a bit of a break. (Art tent etc)

    • Miss Robson is the last of the old school independent vets. All the chains are have seriously hiked their prices over the last few years which now makes pet ownership only possible for the wealthy few. Even with pet insurance -( which often excludes items or has ‘deductibles’ ) it is just so much money. A visit with some medication is often £150 - £200. The vets themselves are excellent.
    • Awful. A Google search came up with this, but will he check his office email over Christmas? Maybe worth also contacting local councillor? 'To contact Southern Housing's CEO, Paul Hackett, you can try his direct email, [email protected], or use the general contact email [email protected], as well as calling their main number, 0300 303 1066, for general inquiries or to be directed to the executive level.' Also, from the website: https://www.southernhousing.org.uk/latest-news/2025/contacting-us-over-the-festive-period   'Contacting us about an emergency? If you have an emergency outside of the above times over the festive period, such as severe flooding, an uncontainable leak, gas leak, complete electrical failure or lift breakdown, please call us on 0300 303 1066' I hope it is sorted out soon.

    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
