Yes, I had an english teacher at primary school who was obsessed with teaching us grammar (separate a rat, crocodile smiles anyone?)

but suddenly I'm unsure and might need to go and look it up

do you already know Orwell's five rules? the sixth being the barbarous thing I mentioned above? for anyone who doesn't, it's well worth a read - inspirational

Was talking about Neal Stephenson with someone and they suggested if I like his scatterbrained, everything including the kitchen sink approach then I might like Thomas Pynchon, so tried GRavity's Rainbow.

What could go wrong, world war 2, spies, V2 rockets.....

It arrived on my doorstep and I excitedly deboxed it, a quick glance at the blurb revealed the words 'ulysees' and 'moby dick'

*klaxons blare*

Sure enough what starts as an apparent parody of the Monty Python 'bally Gerry' sketch soon turns into a 6 page stream of consciousness about a giant adenoid's 30 year invasion of London.

I'm not planning on gettng any further, but would it be worth perservering?

    • There are planes going to more than one London airport. It's been discussed on here before, but I can't remember the exact details. Also if memory serves it depends on the prevailing wind exactly what route the planes take on a particular day, but I may be wrong there. Or maybe they vary the route so the same people don't get the noise each time? I moved here (also North Cross Road area) over thirty years ago and the plane noise has always been bad. I don't think it's got any worse, though it may have done. It has always started around 5am or a bit earlier ( on the days the planes take that route, I suppose?) Concord used to fly over around 5pm each day. That was excellent. It always seemed to be directly over my house, but due to the height of planes I guess many people think they are directly over their house! Triple glazing in my bedroom has helped, but not completely,  though it wasn't installed for that reason.
    • Morning All,  Looking for the above - anyone got one lurking around looking for a new home before I go and buy one new.  My project for the long winter nights! Thanks in advance.
