Business Users of The EDF Please Be Aware Blue Light Magazine Is A Scam

Last week a colleague of mine told me about a call he took from what seemed to be a nice man by the name of ?John? who wanted to sell some advertising space in a magazine called Blue Light Magazine. A publication which had something to do with raising funds for the emergency services in particular the police. ?John? mentioned that my colleague had been selected to be able to be the only Personal Trainer in the area to place an advert in their magazine. This publication he was told would be distributed to 60,000 SE postcodes in the East Dulwich area. What lead me to write this today is that I got the same call about 18 months ago and every now and again they try once more with a slightly different pitch from a slightly adjusted company name.

Don't fall for it; there are ample reports of this team of criminals online and I know a handful of local people mainly self employed and/or newly formed small businesses that have unfortunately lost their money (?200-300). These scandalous people are very persuasive and use aggressive sales methods to push you for an answer. In a telephone conversation I had with ?John? I used the word ?ok? just to get them to hang up as he simply wouldn?t take my lack of interest seriously. I wasn?t paying too much attention but simply didn?t want to be rude and put the phone down. Then a few days after I was I harassed for payments, told they had a recording of me agreeing to some artwork which would be played back in court.

I knew this weren?t right (luckily) and refused to send any money. But then when they threatened with bailiffs I became a little scared and contemplated sending the money, probably because I was just busy at the time and didn?t want the stress. Thinking back I perhaps also pondered sending the money to avoid the embarrassment of bailiffs at my door taking away my possessions. Again fortunate for me I didn?t send any money but I do know that this organised gang are still at it; only recently another Personal Trainer told me they received a call from The Blue Light Magazine. They looked online and saw the masses of reports about this scam... not quite sure I didn?t think of that then LOL but nevertheless I hope this thread helps to increase the awareness of this scam. Please beware they seem to enjoy targeting users of the EDF

    • If the local archive doesn't suffice there's also the London Archives. I remember using what was then called the London Metropolian archive some years ago, and viewing Street Directories among other things  there. https://www.thelondonarchives.org/your-research/research-guides
    • You've sent me down a rabbit hole here! According to the 1909/10 street directory, 10 Whateley Road was the address for John Gibson, beer retailer.   He was born about 1860 in Walworth and his father, also called John, was a beer retailer as well. By the time of the 1891 census, John Gibson Junior had moved to 10 Whateley Road and described himself as a beer house manager. He was married to Margaret and had a son and a daughter. John and Margaret were still living at the address 30 years later when he described himself as a beer retailer. His mother's name was Charlotte Sarah and there is an entry from the same street directory as above for someone by that name described as a beer and wine retailer at 42 North Cross Road. This was most likely his mother, now described as a widow.   Hoping this is of interest.
    • A long overdue review for Niko who we have used a number of times over the years, sometimes to properly finish a job that other plumbers have not done properly. He thinks of everything! I only ever use another plumber if it's urgent and Niko is away. A really kind and thoughtful man and totally trustworthy

The coding session would be good but you need to book well in advance. Also grandson has been doing coding since 6 years old. He now has a 'mentoring role' at his primary school as his knowledge of this subject is years above his chronological age. Dates are still up in the air as their father is trying to juggle leave from a new job in the north of the country.
