Am I the only person having trouble with Mojo Audio, the audio repair shop in the basement next to the Palmerston? They've had an antique record player of mine for ten weeks now, having taken a deposit for the work. Every time I enquire about it, I'm told that it will be ready by such-and-such a day, but it never is.

He's a bit laid back down there but IMO does good work. Personally I'd say what you're saying above, that you've had enough and want it sorted or your kit back. You need to know what work he has to undertake, has he got all the parts he needs, if not how long will they take to secure, elapsed time to do the fix and test, and finally an agreed end date. If he can't agree to that you need to haul it fast.

Well he's just tried to hand my antique record player back to me, unrepaired, and with some of the parts missing. He now claims he's mislaid them. When I pointed out that he's had the item for ten weeks, and repeatedly failed to repair it by the dates he's promised, his reply was: "Oh well..." Is he laid back? Or is he a crook? Either way, I won't be going anywhere near his workshop again.

Sadly, I had the same experience and thought it was my bad luck. However, it seems this is a more common problem. I too had to wait several weeks and recieved my mixer back missing a knob and a button, dust covers and still not repaired. He took my money without telling me about the missing parts and I then had to go back to the shop and he promised he would find/get replacement parts. It took several more weeks before he admitted he could not get the parts and I had to demnand my mixer back and a refund of the money I had already paid in good faith.

He seems to make promises he cannot keep and is not good at managing you as a customer. I would say if it's anything of value or that you value then take it elsewhere.

I don't think he's a crook, but perhaps you'll need to take issue with the missing parts by asking closed questions about what he's going to do about it - he seems to have conceded that he's responsible for mislaying parts.

It's not cool to give your kit back in a worse state than it was received.

At the very least can you get a list of what (in addition) is missing/not working to help conversations with the next technician ?

    • Thought others may be interested to help a local community centre help others.    My bank account offers roundup and it’s been growing all year. As well as treating myself or putting it towards a train ticket to see my family I’ve made a donation to the Albrighton. They can use donations at any time but I hope my donation will go towards the Christmas hampers.    Can you support them so they can provide Christmas hampers?   https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/albrightoncommunityfridge?utm_id=1&utm_term=M22JKQb6W   A donation of £50 will pay for a hamper to feed a family over this Christmas period. A donation of £30 will pay for a hamper to feed someone living on their own over the Christmas period.
    • I've never got Christmas pudding. The only times I've managed to make it vaguely acceptable to people is thus: Buy a really tiny one when it's remaindered in Tesco's. They confound carbon dating, so the yellow labelled stuff at 75% off on Boxing Day will keep you going for years. Chop it up and soak it in Stones Ginger Wine and left over Scotch. Mix it in with a decent vanilla ice cream. It's like a festive Rum 'n' Raisin. Or: Stick a couple in a demijohn of Aldi vodka and serve it to guests, accompanied by 'The Party's Over' by Johnny Mathis when people simply won't leave your flat.
    • Not miserable at all! I feel the same and also want to complain to the council but not sure who or where best to aim it at? I have flagged it with our local MP and one Southwark councillor previously but only verbally when discussing other things and didn’t get anywhere other than them agreeing it was very frustrating etc. but would love to do something on paper. I think they’ve been pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks and my cat is hating it! As am I !
    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
