Sunday afternoon alternative music 'sessions'...thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Afternoon folks!

I'm after a few opinions on the potential of a Sunday afternoon of alternative music hosted by one of the watering holes in ED. I used to run a really successful one not so long ago and think its just what the good folk of ED need. No thrashy, ear-splitting Saturday night fodder, nice and chilled out and full of those 'god, I know this' and 'I remember this' sort of tracks playing in the background. I have an absolutely collossal collection of music gathering dust in my flat and think its about time it got a good airing again.

Anything and everything is allowed from the Brand New Heavies to some classic obscure Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Toots and the Maytals right up to Fleet Foxes, Groove Armada, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly all intermixed with some 'guilty pleasures' and stuff you probably wont have heard in yonks. All to name but a few!

Its all too easy for ego to creep in where music is concerned, but for me its not about sitting in a pub listening to someone's endless playlist while they sit and grin. Where's the fun in that? A book of 'changing tracks' does the rounds where you get to name your top 3 tracks (requires a bit of thinking) to be incorporated into future Sunday afternoon sessions. The reason it has worked so well previously is the participation aspect...I, like many, have heard a lot of music but still love to hear new stuff from all different genres.

It was just to gather a few initial thoughts, and to find out if such sessions would be viable. Has anyone ever tried anything like this before? Is there any mileage in an idea like this or should I give up now?

Cheers in advance!

James.

Very possibly, but in its first stages essentially a pub that plays music that requires a bit of thought. Kind of like a music 'club' if you will. I love hearing new music, live or otherwise and sitting in a relaxed pub environment and sharing it with people seems like a good way to enjoy it. The last one I did was the second Sunday of every month and included guest 'mixes' and a few live band sets...wherever the mood takes really.

    • Missing Cat! 11 months old/ Our friend, Coco, has gone missing. Last seen evening of 31st October near top of Henslowe rd where it meets Underhill Rd in SE22. We know she has started wandering up Friern Rd and further we guess but we imagine she has been spooked by Halloween / Fireworks goings on. She is a grey Siberian mix with some brown stripes down her, very friendly and likes to eat. Please let us know
    • That said, organised displays could be on Saturday before and after and the actual day, and private ones could just not have the loud ones.  It’s all down to accessibility and people caring/not caring
    • The problem this year is that 5th November falls on a Wednesday. So some places will be bringing their "bonfire night" forward to Saturday 1st and some will be knocking it back to Saturday 8th and there'll probably be a few that just go with Wednesday 5th anyway. If you're doing a public display, having it on a weekend gets more crowds. Which basically means a solid week of fireworks.
    • Fireworks in this area do feel totally incessant at this time of year, almost every evening there is terrible noise. I feel great concern for wildlife, pets (I have a senior cat who hates them), as well as people who struggle with PTSD etc. Last year I even had people setting them off in front of my home. Tonight and yesterday evening have been particularly bad. Is there anything we can do as a community to prevent this? What action can we take? Surely we shouldn’t be expected to just put up with it every year for weeks on end!
