Hello All, I've been sent this by the Cllr Michael Situ,(Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling, Community Safety & Volunteering). I thought that local residents would be interested in this, particularly as the changes in policing structure at a local level in Southwark from locally based teams to more mobile groups and fewer police has, I believe affected the visible presence of police on the streets of my ward and surrounding areas in Dulwich and Nunhead, in the south of the borough.

Community Safety ? Police Campaign

Many will already be aware of the Council?s campaign calling on the Mayor to increase the borough?s police officers numbers. The campaign is gaining momentum and was covered well in today?s Southwark News (Page 22) and South London Press (Page 6).

The headline figures are that we have lost 194 Police Officers and 102 PCSOs in Southwark since 2010 many of whom were providing frontline policing on our estates, streets and town centres.

It is evident from figures collated from the Mayor's Office that there has been a reduction in police officers in Southwark. In June 2010 there were 957 police officers and now we're down to 763. The Mayor may argue that we have more officers at our disposal but they're not on our estates, streets and town centres where we need them the most. They're not focused on engaging with community like they once did. Yes, we've made great strides in some areas of crime but we still face great challenges and need an active and community focused police force to support our efforts. We need action now which is why the Council is asking residents to sign the petition and support our campaign to continue to make Southwark a safer place to be.

If you have not signed the petition, please do and also forward the link on to people within your network. We know that most of our residents support this campaign but we need to make sure that they register this by signing the petition.

    • A quick assessment on having a barter scheme amongst the community. An exchange of goods and services may be really helpful during these difficult times.    I wonder if it’s something that someone would be willing to set up separately and link to the forum? Or perhaps  an additional aspect of the forum itself if it was easy to include? I don’t have IT knowledge to set this up unfortunate, but I do have skills that I could offer. From past experience, it would probably work best as a direct exchange rather than coupon credit.    I may be flaunting the rules by posting on this twice, admin please feel free to delete one if this is the case.
    • Echoed. Thank you for stepping up.   whilst I’m here, I was thinking it would be a good idea to have a barter scheme amongst the community. an exchange of goods and services may be really helpful during these difficult times.    wonder if it’s something that someone would be willing to set up separately and link to the forum? Or perhaps  an additional aspect of the forum itself if it was easy to include? I’ll put it out on the forum to evaluate interest.
