My buildings and contents renewal has come in - 674.67 p.a. I took out the policy in 2006 & think I pretty much went with default settings, no high value items or away from home cover, that kind of thing. It's for a 3 bed semi built 1920-30. People keep telling me it's a lot so I wondered how it compares with others locally?
Assuming you have a clean claims history and no issues with the property (subsidence, previous structural problems) you should be able to knock 30-40% off that. Have you tried any of the comparison sites? They're all about as good as each other as far as I can see.
Squeaky clean history & no issues with the property. I did a comparison using USwitch which returned only 7 results of which only Ensleigh came in cheaper.. Today I got a quote from Saga whose best online price was over ?750 which included their 20% online discount. They did come down a fair bit when I spoke to them this afternoon, so I'll take your advice and give my current provider a call to say I'm going to them for Ensleigh/Saga.. ;-)
I use a broker. Always use a broker. Every quote they have ever offered have been cheaper than on the few occasions I have tried using a comparison site. And when I found one quote cheaper than the broker, they investigated what was involved and explained that the offer did not include certain aspects of an insurance policy that I need.

The only time I used a broker, I belatedly discovered that the reason the insurance premium was cheaper was because the excess was very much higher, despite my having specifically asked the broker whether it was the same as my existing insurance.

Luckily I was able to return to my old insurer :(

    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
