Hi all

There are several us at YoungMinds - staff and volunteers - from East Dulwich, and others yet who used to live there. And even though the Parents Helpline (see below) is completely anonymous, you'd have to think that some of the parents who ring it are local as well. We're based near Borough Market.

Talking about mental health is still taboo. But we?ve got a cracking helpline at YoungMinds, staffed by 30 or so volunteers. 10,000 parents distressed about their child?s mental health and emotional wellbeing ring it every year. For free - we?re a charity, after all.

Tough news is that, owing to budget cuts, it?s about to run out of funding, after 21 years. It?s the only helpline of its kind in the UK. It goes and it?s gone. That?s that.

But we can save it. We?ve made this short film - a real corker - narrated by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakshield for all of you fans of The Hobbit films, and star of Spooks), and are having a go at crowdfunding to raise ?20K.

Please have a peek; it's only 90 seconds. And if you would please share this link (and tweet it, if you?ve got Twitter) that'd go miles and miles - just what you need in crowdfunding.

Naturally (and for good luck) please donate ?10 or even ?15, 25 or more if you?re feeling flush.

And please know that I don't ask you to do anything I haven't done. Have donated and plastered on Facebook and LikedIn. Because it's important thew Helpline sticks around.

Happy Christmas + thanks tons

Chris

Thanks Bornagain and Alex

You could also try this link, which takes you right to the crowfunding page:

And I should mention too that, if you think you need the Helpline - it could be your child is under school stress, or you suspect cyberbullying, sexting, and other nasty things - to please ring. It's confidential, costs nothing, and it's a big, big help. The number is 0808 802 544

Thanks again

This is such a great FREE resource - and the only parents' helpline of its kind - cannot believe we might lose it. Working in schools, I see so much anxiety, insecurity, self-loathing and worse in children and young people. And as a parent, it's such a relief to know it's there if I ever needed it.

Will definitely be donating to the cause.

East Dulwichers

A big, big thanks to everyone who has shared the http://www.youngminds.org.uk/savethehelpline link, who've written to say how the Helpline has helped, and especially those who have donated.

We've raised ?2,279 through crowdfunding so far. Crowdfunding runs until Christmas Eve, so if there's anyone who's in want of some good Christmas charm and spirit...

Also, please don't forget that if you've got any concerns about a child or teenager's mental health, the Helpline is free and anonymous and will give you guidance and assurance. 0808 802 544.

Best

Chris

    • In just two days, we’ll take to the streets to show Donald Trump that he and his politics are not welcome here. On Saturday the global far-right mobilised their biggest protest for decades. We want to show that supporters of Trump and fascism are not the majority – far from it. Here are all the details you need for the day. The march assembles at Portland Place, near the BBC, at 2pm (see assembly blocs below). After speeches here, the march will move off at 3pm. It will then march down Regent St, through Piccadilly Circus, on Whitehall (past Downing St) to our rally at Parliament Square. The rally at Parliament Square will begin around 5pm and finish at 7pm. If you can’t make it to the march, feel free to join the rally after work! (Nearest tube: Westminster). The short, accessible version of the route assembles at the top of Whitehall (SW1A 2DY) at 4.30pm to march to Parliament Square for 5pm. You may also prefer to just join the rally directly at Parliament Square.  Join a bloc – and make friends! Our movement is diverse, and various elements are forming ‘blocs’ on the march to emphasise their visual presence collectively. You can join these blocs or form up behind them:   A) Palestine, near BBC, W1A 1AA B) Climate, W1B 1NS C) Amnesty, around junction with New Cavendish St, W1B 1LU D) Migrants' rights, W1B 1LS E) Jewish bloc, W1B 1QQ F) Ukraine, around junction with Weymouth St, W1B 1JL G) Europe, W1B 1NR More stewards still needed Stewards are a crucial part of keeping the protest safe for everyone to participate. They are a visible point of contact for attendees who may need directions or other assistance. Experience of stewarding is useful but it's also fine if you haven't done it before. You will be issued with a hi-vis jacket and briefed in advance and on the day.  Sign up to be a steward Staying comfortable on the day The demonstration lasts for several hours, so we suggest you should:     Bring a bottle of water and snacks (and eat beforehand)     Charge your phone fully the night before, and bring a portable charger if you can     Go to the loo beforehand (really!)     Buddy up with someone, or stick together as a group – it can be hard to find people easily if people wander off     Coming alone? Protests can be a great place to meet like-minded people. If you feel unsure, you can always talk to a steward     Consider the weather: bring a waterproof jacket or wear suncream where necessary     Wear comfortable clothes and footwear, and use our accessible route if you need to (see above) Bring your friends and family on Wednesday. Let’s make this massive! In solidarity, Stop Trump Coalition
