Ok this is an original thread isn't it .... ? Hope so.

It's for people to recommend wine that can be bought locally.

You can recommend a wine either as

1) Decent drinkable good value wine and where to find it, or

2) Great wine for a special occasion, doesn't have to be a lot of money, just a special occasion wine for you

State

1) name and region of wine

2) where bought (preferably in ED but not compulsory)

3) price per bottle

I'll start:

Best value wine in ED for me is

(I'm an old world man)

1) Piccini Chianti (a bright orange label)

2) Sainsbury Dulwich

3) About ?7

You can add some description of the wine and what it goes with if you want but I'm not very good at describing my tastes so I'll pass.

Thanks.

Good thread, Mick.

We've been using Majestic of late and I can recommend the following, all around ?6-7 a bottle.

Ondine Shiraz - Very light easy everyday drinking that also goes well with most foods.

Beefsteak Club Malbec - great with steak as the name would suggest but drank this with a chicken and coconut curry and it worked well, so what do I know?

Corolla, Nero D'avola - if you like your Chianti then you should like this. Improved after being open for 48hrs and had a lot of cherry on the finish (that's about all the tasting notes you'll get from me).

I don't drink a lot of white but can wholeheartedly recommend Sainsburys TDF Gruner Veltliner at ?7.50 a bottle.

If you want to splash out then pretty much anything from Californian winemakers Ridge will be delicious but they start at ?30+ so perhaps special occasions only (it is for me).

Although I started with my favourite cheap bottle recommendation - I recently had a special occasion wine:

Chorley les Beaune

Cave de Bruno

?25

Beaune is my new favourite region. I was all Bordeaux for a few years especially with read meat, but I'm moving towards burgundy now in my old age.

And on Christmas day I had a bottle of

Morey St Denis - Vielles Vignes

Cave be Bruno ( I think although cant really recall where I bought it)

about ?30

Not perfect for turkey perhaps but I don't often drink white wine

I was of the same view until recently Loz - try the Beaune from Bruno.

True - but if it's a special occasion I would much rather a decent white Burgundy than an average bottle of Champagne.

If you want to avoid the dreaded pancreatitis or acute liver failure I'd suggest plenty of water. Sparkling for me with ice and slice.

Remember folks drink responsibly.

Cheers!

    • I didn't say wedge it "slightly" open. I meant to wedge it fully open.
    • I have a rescue Spanish greyhound (galgo) from the charity mentioned above. You can contact Greyhounds in Need or one of the more local Kent greyhound rescue charities. They are fantastic family dogs. They do love walkies 2 or 3 times a day but they actually don't need to be walked too far and then they will happily loaf around on the sofa being very chill. They are brilliant with kids but not recommended if you own a cat as they have a strong prey drive. They also should be kept on the lead in local parks. They prefer to be around other sight-hounds (well my one does) and there are loads of local sighthound owners in Peckham, Crystal Palace etc and a very lively WhatsApp group that is brilliant if you need dog sitting as you can usually find someone to do that for free in return for you looking after the dog at a later date etc.
    • @Jenijenjen I assure you we are always polite and friendly too! Which is why the behaviour we have been receiving is so frustrating. The kids always leave her with a “Thank you have a lovely day”  Our concern is leaving the gate slightly wedged doesn’t stop the action of slamming it open and closed…still leading to damage
    • If you're talking about who I think you are, I find them more exuberant than rude and usually smiling and polite. But then, I'm usually smiling and polite to them. Can you not wedge open your gate when you're expecting them?
