buying supplies for building project (lintel, beams, padstones)

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was just looking for some advice. We have had some building works start and agreed to supply some of the materials. We have managed to order our RSJs, but the architects plans also call for a concrete lintel, padstones and a wooden beam. Can anyone suggest the best place to get these please? Thank you!

A structural engineer should be specifying structural elements, not an architect.

That aside, any well stocked building supplies company like Travis Perkins should be able to help...http://www.travisperkins.co.uk/c/heavy-building-materials/lintels/893337

    • Because of the weather which delayed completion with roofer only being able to work certain days, it was up from November - end of January. Went slightly higher than gutters (we also had guttering replaced).
    • It's tough being a courier and the pay which is largely based on the number they deliver is miserable. Hence the staff turnover is high. EFRI was previously branded as HERMES but they had to create a new brand name because of poor performance. We get regular courier deliveries and EVRI are by far the worst. They just drop the parcel at the front door - often without ringing the bell. But worst is when they deliver to the equivalent door number on LL instead of ours on EDG. Best are ParcelForce, DHL and DPD by a wide margin.
    • I know the couple you mean, and she has always been friendly and smiley when delivering to me, but obviously in a hurry, for all the reasons outlined in the thread. My gate is always open, however (unless someone coming to the house closes it when they leave). I can't see the point of gates that have to be opened and shut again every time someone comes to the house. It just seems a waste of time, and it's annoying if you are carrying stuff. And a closed gate  conveys a sort of "my house is my fortress" feel. To me, anyway.
    • Thanks for posting this. Really interesting. It would be good if you added a star rating, so that it was easier to do comparisons / see what your top recommendations are. Great blog though!
