shell
I placed this in another section but thought it worth putting it on here too. My mum is making the big move here from up north and I'm keen to make life as fun as possible for her. She is only 60 but has some health issues so the usual suggestions for activities often aren't possible. I'm looking firstly for a GP good at dealing with emphysema .. hopefully one that will prescribe more holistically ( stress management, supervised exercise etc ) rather than pump her full of drugs that make her feel awful. And secondly for social activities. Edanna told me about a singing group for people with COPD which is brilliant. i suppose I'm looking for friendly non judgemental environments .. she loves a bit of live music too so I was wondering if The Goose is Out might be good. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/56114-advice-and-suggestions-for-mum-please/ Share on other sites
savage
How about doing a course/ activity at the Thomas Carlton centre. There are loads of reasonably priced courses which would be a good place to meet new people and learn something new aswell. Ruffler
She might be interested in the University of the Third Age. They now have a Dulwich branch. http://u3asites.org.uk/code/u3asite.php?site=678&page=1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/56114-advice-and-suggestions-for-mum-please/#findComment-835533 Share on other sites
Sue
shell Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> she loves a bit of live music too> so I was wondering if The Goose is Out might be> good. Any suggestions would be so appreciated.HiWe would love to see your Mum at the Goose!You/she can find out what's on here:http://www.thegooseisout.comTell her to make herself known to us when she arrives (I'm usually on the ticket table), and we'll find her some friendly people to sit with. There will be people of all ages, and usually plenty in her age group. On popular nights she would need to get there early to be sure of a seat (or a ticket in some cases). Do PM me if you'd like to know more :)ETA: Our most informal nights are our monthly Singarounds, which are free entry (voluntary donation at the interval). Listeners are welcome too - she doesn't have to sing if she doesn't want to, but we usually find that most people at least join in the choruses where songs have one (or sometimes the whole song if it's well known!)Those are perhaps where she would find it easiest to get to know people - it's a very friendly and supportive environment - though we can certainly introduce her to people at our ticketed nights as well. shell
Mum's pretty anti meds and wants to do as much as she is able .. thinking thats the best medicine! she's very excited to get here ( in june hopefully ) so we shall be giving everything a go. But you're right .. also nice just to have good companionship. Not easy to make new friends at 60 but I reckon if you can do it anywhere, East Dul is a good place to start! ( fingers crossed ) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/56114-advice-and-suggestions-for-mum-please/#findComment-836192 Share on other sites
