Gatwick airport pick up con

I picked my girlfriend up from Gatwick earlier and followed the signs for pick up. There are no signs saying you have to pay for pick up until you get trapped into a one way slip road leading to an unmanned toll booth. I was a bit pissed off that I'd been tricked into having to pay for something I didn't realise I had too as there is no sign. So I carefully reversed back out of the one way slip road with my hazards on and drove around to drop off instead...

Does anyone know, if I get a ticket for reversing out, where I stand legally? They don't display the sign saying you have to pay until you're forced into a one way section. It's a con. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

It's similar at Luton Airport. ?2.50 to drop someone off. Greedy bastards.
