To be honest, I occasionally hear noise from the constitution club into the early hours but given that it is usually a wedding or family celebration on a weekend evening I overlook it as it does not happen terribly often and seems a bit spoil sport as we all have important occasions in our lives. How about a little tolerance given that it is not a regular occurrence? Also - it is possible they may have applied for an extension past their licensed hours?

Comment anything to do with your link to Edward Alleyn Club Otto?

Perhaps you could let us know - was a different or extended licence in operation on Saturday?

A temporary events notice would show up on the southwark register. There is none listed. But that would have been the solution, although for an outdoor event it would have not been allowed to go later than 8pm I think.

I appreciate all those saying 'it's a one off and let it go', but there are also safety and insurance issues to consider. A license takes account of those things. The wedding party could have moved indoors in the evening, it didn't. Consideration has to run both ways.

And looking at your posting history Mike, all YOU do is spend your time on here insulting others.

Mike Dodd, unlike you I actually live in ED and not far from Alleyn's so the subject matter of this thread is of some interest to me. End of (another clich? which you probably use).

And what exactly is embarrassing, Barred? Mike Dodd's posting record?

Any band for hire should cone with their own liability insurance. Not sure that's the same thing.

Most kids especially younger ones will clearly be going to bed way before the reported noise levels.

No event should disturb our community to the degree posted. if you are ever disturbed call the Southwark Council noise team. The more that call them the quicker the response and the quicker they take action.

What I'm perplexed about is Alleyns School allowing this. They have 24/7 staff no site.

So if you were disturbed even now email [email protected] and copy me. If a number of people report the same problem I'm sure the school would issue an apology.

People complain about children possibly being disturbed, but its really themselves. Be honest.

12.30..... Come off it. There are noisy drunkish people walking down my road much later than that most nights who are more likely to disturb anyone than some music.

Why are people expected to tip-toe around after a certain time in case they disturb sleeping children? Not everyone around here has children. Maybe you're right Mick Mac and it's really the fact they don't like people enjoying themselves on a Saturday night. I get woken up by noisy people walking down my road late at night and by my neighbour's screaming kids early in the morning but I don't complain to the council.

The bass was intrusively loud where I live. Even with the window closed. And on that hot evening, I really wanted the windows open to keep cool. We put the TV on louder than normal to try and drown it out...could still hear and feel the bass.

Yes, it was a party, and I want people to enjoy themselves (particularly when it doesn't stop me having a good time too)...but if they'd been, say, 25% quieter, and maybe finished an hour earlier, would they have had less fun? I was pretty tolerant of it, as I'm sure most people were, but then It was also incredibly frustrating to not have anyone to contact about it at the time.

And my main concern is, if it happened this time, will it happen again and again?

I know we have the usual snarks swimming in these waters waiting to take a bite out of genuine concerns, but I'm very glad to have seen I'm not the only person who thought the noise was a bit out of order.

In answer to Mick Mac, Georgia and others, I will repeat what I said in an earlier post.

This was not a one off party held by a local resident. It was a commercial venture run by an organisation for a profit. There would have been specific conditions attached to their licence. If, when faced with breaches of the licence, the attitude is "Why complain? People were having fun. You're a load of moaning gits", what is the point of having a licence in the first place if its provisions are not going to be monitored/enforced?

Surely people can "enjoy themselves" without disrupting other people's sleep? How would the same people (or indeed Mick Mac or Georgia) like it if, say, they had an important interview or meeting the following day but had their sleep disrupted by other people "enjoying themselves"? I bet that they wouldn't then take such a tolerant attitude towards the revellers.

The Alleyns Bursar has been in touch with me in response to a query from me. They have apologised directly to those that have contacted them about this noise event.

It was the first wedding reception they've hosted in a marquee with music. They will not take such bookings again to avoid the risk of this noise problem ever happening again.

    • I'm glad you are making good use of your car, but bemused how you are saving on petrol by only half filling every 3-4 weeks? Unless this prevents you using the car as often as you would like, surely you would use just the same amount of petrol, and spend the same amount of money, if you filled it up completely every 6 - 8 weeks? Have I missed something here?

    • My car was registered in 2004. Automatic, ULEZ compatible.  Used to use it daily for work until 2016 when retired. Still used 3-5 days weekly after that as was doing voluntary work. My mobility has gradually declined and  it is painful to walk.. Family live in Kent, Essex and Sussex - so need car to visit them. My car battery is 2 years old - when had to call out RAC to assist at home as it was dead, they found it was the original battery installed in 2004!! My car is essential - shopping each week, being able to go to garden centres, or DIY stores, taking the cat to the vet and  other social activities. I now only half fill with petrol every 3- 4 weeks, so save that way. I am careful  with my finances and would be lost without the car. It is regularly maintained (Turners).
