Nitrous Oxide in East Dulwich.

I was at the bus stop on the parade on East Dulwich Rd. last Sunday week.. and was surprised

to see a dozen or so Nitrous Oxide tubes in the road.

These things..

There have been deaths caused by this legal high. Lambeth have taken steps to stop the sale of Nitrous Oxide.

Is this stuff being sold in East Dulwich shops and should residents be concerned.

Does Counsellor Barber have any views on this subject..

Not sure of the Lambeth situation. It would seem anyone caught will face a ?1,000 fine under some

social order by-law.

Hi DF for contacting me.

Currently you can only sell this stuff for medical use or catering purposes. But what's to stop someone diverting a catering use to drug taking. Nothing.

So society has a choice. So far one person I believe has sadly been reported as dying from taking this stuff. The sellers are almost all taxed businesses - if many are pretending to be selling for catering purposes.

Outlawing it would be national legislation. Using by laws to stop selling on our streets eminently practical if Lambeth feels it's a really high priority for them.

I would suggest we have many other drugs that cause far more problems.

In Southwark the under aged cigarette trading standards operations stopped for lack of resources. If Southwark has resources I would suggest it uses them in this area.

Millions of people drink millions pints of beer a day and millions of bottles of wine.

They do so over the course of many years....

Nitrous Oxide can kill some one on their first hit.

No one is going to die on their first 1/2 pint of lager.

I'm actually at Kings tomorrow about my lungs.. as I was exposed to Asbestos over a 13 year period

working for The GPO / BT back in the 70's.

And I do not smoke...

There are some things in life you should definitely worry about - and would have hoped that someone at the time should have worried a bit more on your behalf.

Then there are other things no-one really need worry about - but someone decides it's a 'story' and some kind of major threat to society at large.

Not strictly true. It can only kill a person with a predisposition to certain health features, which are quite rare.

Also the overall cost of alcohol to health is much greater than nitrous. Nitrous may (depending on circumstances) present a greater risk to the individual, but alcohol presents a greater risk to society (as well as vulnerable individuals). But don't get me wrong, I don't want to ban alcohol. I'm with Prof Nutt on this issue. And I also agree with JB, that resources would be better spent elsewhere. xx

Is Dr Grey still in charge of the Chest Clinic I wonder.

I used to go and play in Asbestos all through the school hols. There was an abandoned "Esso" depot/wharf. There were stinky bunkers/broken rusty tankers and asbestos to make camps out of. Happy days !! splutter !!
