Help needed - repairing/replacing brick work behind wood burner

I am looking for someone who might have done this before to advise / do the work on our fireplace.

Due to the age of the brickwork behind our current wood burner (and before that an open fire) - the bricks have started to crumble and I would like to get this repaired. The wood burner has been removed so is ready to be repaired in time for fire burning!

I think the options are either to replace the bricks (not sure how big a job this is?)

or to plaster over the existing bricks. I understand their is special fireproof board that can be used behind a burner?
