adding to the wise words of brum but on the more boring issue of money: insurance often requires that you have fire alarms these days. i know that our buildings insurance is not valid without them.

Hi SE I'm not sure on the regulations but it sounds as if you need to have some more sockets added regardless, seeing as you are having to use extension leads. A qualified electrician will be able to help you out there. I do know that its good practice to limit the number of extension leads as much as possible and it is not advisable to overload any sockets, as this could cause localised overheating or a short-circuit.

as far as i know only new builds are required to fit mains operated fire/smoke detectors, but old conversions are not. its not an expensive outlay though and if anyone needs a number of an electrician to fit them i have it. pm me
