Ahh memories! Finished in the late 70's I believe? It was this show and my uncle (RIP), who got me into becoming a regular at the Players Theatre underneath the arches on Villiers Street, Charing Cross. It ran for a good 30 years. Wotcha' all the neighbours cried! We'll knock 'em in the Old Kent Road!

Was Leonard Sachs the guy with what seemed very long made up words? This and The Black and White Minstrel Show were favourites of my mum years ago.

Leonard Sachs introduced the acts on The Good Old Days with long winded descriptions of what each performer did. Although many of the words that he used were probably not found in any dictionary they were instantly identifiable as soon as the performer started his act.

Stanley Unwin (occasionally known as 'Professor' Stanley Unwin) spoke complete gobbledy gook by mixing words up but at the end of what were often long winded and seemingly meaningless sentences it was possible (just) to understand what he was talking about. His was a very unusual speciality act and I think that he probably appeared on The Good Old Days although how Leonard Sachs would have introduced him I can't imagine.

    • I think that sub post offices cannot operate without a formally trained person there, so maybe it closed because there was no trained cover, perhaps through sickness.
    • TGJones, who bought WHS's high street business, are obliged to abide by the PO contracts that were already in place, but I guess as soon as these come up for renewal, they might reconsider. And I think the Forest Hill PO is open? Maybe it was a temporary closure for some reason.
    • New update from Persepolis: So our new restaurant is VERY NEARLY OPEN. Remember: it is on SE22, the other end of East Dulwich. Persian food, kebabs, all the good things like Persepolis but with added meat. And added wine and beer. We’ll let you know when it’s opened but we’re reckoning the beginning of March…
    • Paul Edgley sent round Damian to assess my electrics following a fuse failure.  He came the next day, I had a quote that evening, and a replacement modern metal fusebox was completed a few days later. Damian arrived on time, worked hard and was done in 4 hours.  He sent the certificate to the council and provided a copy.  Quote, invoice and service all very smooth on Whatsapp, would recommend.  Works out of Dartford but does a lot of work round here so availability is good - Edgley Contracting - 07802 627967. Great electrician!
