Advice / tradesman for air vent in old fireplace

Hi ED

Bit of a random one... I just moved into a house that has been VERY cheaply converted. The philistine of a previous owner ripped out all the victorian fireplaces but what is confusing me is that the air vents are 10cms from the ceiling at the top of the wall, rather than 3 bricks up from the floor where the fire used to be, as I've seen previously. I'm not really sure what kind of a tradesman I need to ask about this. Anyone have experience with ripping out fireplaces who could recommend someone?

My questions in case anyone else has experienced this:

1- given it's very odd placement, is this vent still doing it's job of preventing humidity?

2 - if no, do I really need it? It's slap bang in the middle of a wall and looks really odd

3 - if I do need a vent, can I put one a the bottom of the wall and seal this one at the top?

Thank you as always!

Jess

Hello mate , every fireplace I have bricked up or covered up I have put air brick at bottom , if vents at top then there will be bad circulation at bottom which may cause moisture , I would cover up top vent and punch hole three bricks up and put either air brick or cover hole with a hit and miss plastic vent, if you need a price for job let me know,

Regards

Dave

    • I’d also recommend Paul for electrical work. He came round the other week to help us out with a handful of jobs (installing an SPD, new light fittings, installing a dimmer switch, a bathroom fan). His quote was cheaper than what I got from others, he turned up on time and he got the job done quickly.
    • We’d like to add our recommendation for Lukasz and team at L&L Building & Maintenance.  Lukasz has recently installed a roof terrace for us, and we’ve found him a pleasure to work with from start to finish. We contacted about a dozen recommended builders and found his quote very competitive. During the build his team delivered quality work, they were no hassle in the house at all and they kept the place tidy every day. The terrace looks great, and we’re very happy customers. What stood out in particular was Lukasz’s responsiveness, right from discussing quotes to follow-up during the build. Lukasz often checked in and was always available when we needed him.  We’ll definitely contact Lukasz again for future building work and we’d happily recommend him to others looking for a reliable builder.   Lukasz Kugaczewski L&L Building & Maintenance 07926651960 [email protected] www.landl-build.com
    • Yes, I did mention the train, which I now get from East Dulwich to Guys instead of the 40. Depends where in East Dulwich you are starting from which route is easiest! I think it is probably lack of staff rather than lack of hospitals which is the problem?
    • What can be done? How about reporting it to the police?
