Advice on a new turntable

I am replacing my 1980s model having at last sorted out some storage place for my record collection. I plan to use it with my original amp, lovely 1950s speakers, but the analogue tuner and tape player will go!

Meant to go to Richer sounds yesterday and may still pop in tomorrow.

Any advice? Not sure why I would want a USB model (amp just takes raw wire input). What else has changed in the last three decades?

Plan up to a couple of hundred, I understand that this is nowhere near top of the range, but I doubt whether my record collection is in great condition!

I got a dancette 1960's just to sustain my remaining record collection. Now if only I could beef it up with some louder speakers....

Our house has an extravagant Acpustic Solutions turntable and a more user friendly Linn (which I'd like to sell). If I was going for a simple entry level decent turntable I'd go for Pro-Ject Elemental. Gets the Which? Best buy and is around ?150.

Project and Rega are the names you consistently hear when it comes to entry level turntables.

But with all your retro gear, what you really want is a nice refurbished Garrard 401! Quality piece of engineering and a real centrepiece.

The project essential is a good one, with decent cartridge included. 200 squids at Richer atm.

The days of getting a bargain quality second hand turntable (or records for that matter) seem to be in the past - eBay sellers know the value of such things.

Go to billy vee in Lee, they have demo rooms and can give you some excellent advice, been using them since 1990

Can't go wrong with a rega planar 3.. I've had mine for probably 20 years and it's never let me down

If anyone on here has vinyl they are seeking to offload be sure to drop me a line.. Any amounts considered.. Hopeless addict 😀

I hadn't followed this thread in recent posts, but was about to conclude that I had bought a British made Rega from Billy Vee Sound Systems in Lee. Found details in part by accident on line, should have just read the above recommendation,

good choice on the rega.. you'll have no regrets there.. as an upgrade you might want to buy a white belt for it as it does make a noticeable difference

Playing with a 1982 amp, 1950s speakers, 1997 CD player and 2016 turntable. Still sounds good though.

I binned by 1985 tape deck and my 1970s tuner. No valves sadly....

Nice to go to a specialist and talk it through. Richer Sounds were OK but not as helpful
