New Southwark Plan - Judith Kerr Primary School 'Open Space'

Southwark Council has published its New Southwark Plan preferred option which states that the green space (playing field) at Judith Kerr Primary School should be designated ?Open Space? status. The proposed designation to ?Open Space? in the New Southwark Plan will help protect it from the current threat of development by The Dulwich Estate.

JKPS is a state primary school and leases its building and grounds, which includes the green space, from The Dulwich Estate. The Dulwich Estate incorporated an option into the lease allowing it to develop residential housing on the green space subject to planning permission. If the development is approved, the green space will be permanently lost to the school. This will remove the school's only playing field, will reduce the outside space available by more than half, and remove all green space. This will severely restrict opportunities for education, play and sport for generations of children. Any development will add congestion to a very busy intersection and its proximity to the school gates will constitute an ongoing safety risk.

The New Southwark Plan preferred option is now open for consultation - Closing date is 5pm 12th Feb 2016. We need your help to ensure the proposed designation of 'Open Space' status is approved. Please register your support for this new designation by contacting:

Here is a suggested draft. Many thanks

?The Judith Kerr Primary School Green Space is a vital resource for the growing community of children of all abilities. Having access to outside space big enough to run around and play enhances their days immeasurably. Involvement in outside sports through PE and clubs including football and hockey develops teamwork skills and the development of gross motor skills supports classroom learning. The Veg Patch development and climbing equipment will need additional funding and we are keen to see the Friends of Judith Kerr and the School be able to secure this. Looking after the interesting collection of trees and making the space accessible to other community groups, for example, in school holidays will help to cement the school as part of the wider community. We thank Southwark for suggesting this designation and support the change?
