I have failed to obtain a goose in Dulwich for Christmas and was thinking of going to Smithfields early tomorrow morning- the website says before 7am is best. Thought it would make a nice start to Christmas- has anyone been?- is parking a problem if we go there at 6am Lets not talk about the road conditions...........

There's a butchers at Smithfiled outside the market that's open at reasonable times of the day - got a massive ham from there the other day at lunchtime. Unhelpfully I can't give you the name of it, but it's next door to Smithfields Bar & Grill (and is currently selling a whole rolled sirloin for ?19.90
Parking should be fine ar Smithfields that time of morning, probably in a side street but will be warden free - I got up there in under 20 mins 2 weeks ago at 5am (dropping MIL at City Thameslink). Just drive staright over Blackfriars Bridge and then do a right after you go under Holborn Viaduct.

Borough Market tends to be over priced and rated IMO.

Never done Smithfields although have beeen past during teh day and a couple of butchers are open on the edges of the market. I believe they have a sale on Christmas Eve to clear stock.

For Covent Garden Flower Market it is a really large double "room" area, but much smaller than the fruit and vegatable market. Suggest getting there really really early, like by 7am, traders are beginning to finish up so the earlier the better. Have a wonder around, decide on what you want and then haggle the price the sellers ask for, otherwise you will pay over the odds. Both the flower market and fruit and veg markets are a great experience. From memory I think it was buildings C and D for the Fruit and Veg market.

well I was so full of good intentions but at 8.00am hubby got a goose at Rosendale road butchers- despite them telling me last week they would not have any. New years resolution to do smithfields and covent garden early morning. Thank you for all your sound advise.

    • Ah, thanks,  it all comes flooding back. I've actually been to the Hastings shop, I'd forgotten all about it, along with her name! Didn't she (in between?)  take over what  was then The Magnolia, previously The Magdala, now The Lordship, with her then partner? Or is that some figment of my imagination?
    • Looking for crate/toys/play pen etc. Ideally will buy in a bundle. Can collect!
    • A belated recommendation for Iain and Paul od Oddbods who came to help me with various jobs before Christmas.  Painting ceiling, renewing silicone around bath, repairing a window sill which was almost beyond repair and hanging a large mirror.   Very happy with their work and they are friendly and very reliable and excellent at communicating.  No hesitation in recommending them.
    • I just wanted to post for all my neighbours a recommendation of Niko, the wonderful plumber who works locally. Niko has done work for me over the years, including large and small jobs. He recently replaced four radiators in my house which have helped us really be warm for the first time! I recommend Niko so whole heartedly because (1) he is completely straight forward and will advise you not to do something / a cheaper solution, if that is what is best for you; and (2) he is one of the kindest and most honest people I have ever known. He goes the extra mile to sort out problems, particularly urgent ones.
