womanofdulwich
I have failed to obtain a goose in Dulwich for Christmas and was thinking of going to Smithfields early tomorrow morning- the website says before 7am is best. Thought it would make a nice start to Christmas- has anyone been?- is parking a problem if we go there at 6am Lets not talk about the road conditions........... SingingWilks
Hi womanofdulwichI'm afraid I haven't a clue about Smithfields but Borough Market is open tomorrow from 08:00-14:00 and easily reachable on a number 40 bus. I went there this morning and there were plenty of geese and other fine Christmas goodies to be had.SW Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/9260-smithfields-market/#findComment-279261 Share on other sites

womanofdulwich
on singing wilks what a good idea- I tried running the 6am option in the 14 year old son - even though I said it would be an amazing start to Christmas it was a non starter. what time do you think is the latest you can grab a goose? RosieH
There's a butchers at Smithfiled outside the market that's open at reasonable times of the day - got a massive ham from there the other day at lunchtime. Unhelpfully I can't give you the name of it, but it's next door to Smithfields Bar & Grill (and is currently selling a whole rolled sirloin for ?19.90 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/9260-smithfields-market/#findComment-279299 Share on other sites
womanofdulwich
Thanks Rosie. I have never been to Smithfields, and as I have the day off thought may be this was a chance to go and do one of those "London things"- you know ? Never been to covent garden flower market either............ ????
Parking should be fine ar Smithfields that time of morning, probably in a side street but will be warden free - I got up there in under 20 mins 2 weeks ago at 5am (dropping MIL at City Thameslink). Just drive staright over Blackfriars Bridge and then do a right after you go under Holborn Viaduct. dbboy
Borough Market tends to be over priced and rated IMO. Never done Smithfields although have beeen past during teh day and a couple of butchers are open on the edges of the market. I believe they have a sale on Christmas Eve to clear stock. For Covent Garden Flower Market it is a really large double "room" area, but much smaller than the fruit and vegatable market. Suggest getting there really really early, like by 7am, traders are beginning to finish up so the earlier the better. Have a wonder around, decide on what you want and then haggle the price the sellers ask for, otherwise you will pay over the odds. Both the flower market and fruit and veg markets are a great experience. From memory I think it was buildings C and D for the Fruit and Veg market. Ani-Warnerke
If you want a goose - then 100% go to Allens in mayfair - its the best - hit it a 6am onwards no cues , and top top drawer, not silly money either, you will never do your christmas run at any other butcher.117 Mount Street London, W1K 3LA ...go go go Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/9260-smithfields-market/#findComment-279406 Share on other sites

dbboy
I can also recommend Buntings the butchers on the right hand side at the top end of Peckham Park Road (just off the Old Kent Roard), very friendly and will cut anything you require. Have used them now for over a year and have been very satisfied.
