I'm usually the one dishing out playgroup advice, but now I'm asking for help!

We've had a nice little weekly routine of groups going for the last 18 months, but from today my eldest child has started at a creche on Tuesday mornings (he previously just went on Thursdays), meaning that I walked the streets like a lost soul with my little girl this morning - thank goodness for the Bread of Life cafe, where I took sanctuary from the cold and made conversation with random people simply because my chatterbox of a son wasn't with me! We used to go to Leapers, but I now won't be able to get there early enough to get in.

I need something suitable for an extremely active 18 month old, that starts at 10/10.30am, ideally free/cheap. Does anyone know whether the St Barnabus playgroup still happens on a Tuesday morning? The creche is up near the Harvester pub, so ideally I need something I can walk to from there!

Thanks :)

Would be a bit of a power walk, but there is a lovely playgroup at the Copplestone Centre (Copplestone Road). We've just started going again. Is in a big hall and has a slide, some walk around things and a few ride on things. They do a snack and juice time too for the kids, and you can help yourself to coffee/tea. They ask for ?1 per child (I think!) Think it starts at 10 but not sure.

Pickle, the copleston group is great, very friendly and a lot of space to run around. We have been going for the last four months and my very active son is usually so knackered afterwards he falls asleep immediately after lunch without any whinging. The slide is always a winner, they also do arts and crafts for older kids. and there is usually singing 10-15 min at the end. It is 10-12 (you cna drop in any time though!) and ?1 donation. and there is a lot of free parking around.

hope to see you there

Another vote for Coppleston - starts at 10am but very flexible (never gets too busy as its a big hall), and you can park anywhere round there. I reckon it would be perfect for M - we should be there when I finish work at the end of Feb, as I am going to swap my Leapers to a Wednesday morning.

What happens on a Monday morning (just with little 'un?)?

The St Barnabus todd group is now held in the Dulwich Village Hall - in the back room which has its entrance on Gilkes Crescent by the Audi Garage - not quite free but v cheap and v friendly, and always a cheery thing to start the day with the Hokey Cokey! 10 am start I think

Yes, come to the Copplestone! It really is a good playgroup- have been going for many years! Mumra- am looking forward to the group next week too...

On Mondays there used to be a playgroup at the Catholic church behind Dulwich Library. Does anyone know if it's still going?

    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
    • The Dutch are addicted to New Year fireworks and spent €130million this year on them. However,  sales to individuals will be banned as from this year and celebrations will be organised by local and city councils. I have Dutch friends and for them, this can’t come soon enough. However, at least there it’s concentrated  on one night. Here, it’s never ending, any excuse to make a noise is seized upon with gusto. In addition to the annual celebrations, add birthdays, weddings, engagements, divorces, christenings, BBQs, etc etc. I dare say you can funerals to that list as well. Yesterday it started mid-afternoon and just carried on until the early hours. In the past, I’ve been woken up at 4am. Anyyone who doesn’t like it can go hang and you can ignore completely the  effects on people’s animals and wildlife. Don’t hold your breath about anything being done here, however.
