Fun & different birthday party ideas for children

Hello!

If anyone is looking for party ideas or things to do with a group of children, my child (aged 10) had a great time when 'WordPlay' came to our house for a private radio party. All the kids that came wrote radio plays, then had to record it in a really cool radio area (in our living room), with all their sound effects! Myself and my husband had the pleasure of listening live all from the next room's radio.

Zoe & Leon who run these workshops are so good with kids, and all the children really enjoyed the whole thing. They even sent me a lovely email afterwards with attachments of all the plays.

I would definitely be using them again and would recommend this to any parent in East Dulwich looking for exciting birthday party ideas for their children. Here is their email address if you fancy giving it a go:

Thanks EDMum for such a lovely recommendation! We had a lot of fun at the party, and hope the kids did too!

We are also running a children's workshop during Easter Holidays at Village Books.

For anyone who might be interested, on Sunday 10th April, we will be hosting two radio drama making workshops for children aged 8-13 to script their own radio plays in groups, inspired by a range of 'challenge items'. They then broadcast live on air in our pop-up studio which will be set up in Village Books. After scripting the short radio drama, each team will experiment with Foley sounds, learning how to turn everyday objects into radio 4 worthy dramas!

All audio masterpieces are live which friends and parents can tune into either in the store or from the comfort of their own homes! We also record the lot to be listened to over and over again on our website after the event:

There will be two radio workshops on Sunday 10th April:

Either

10am - 12pm

Or

2pm - 4pm

Light refreshments will be included in each workshop!

Tickets cost ?12.50 per child - pop in to the bookstore before 10th April to reserve your spot & grab your ticket.

If you would like any more information, please feel free to email us on [email protected] or email Village Books directly on [email protected] to reserve your ticket and pay in store.

We look forward to seeing (and hearing) you all there!

All the best,

Leon & Zoe

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
    • You've got a point.  Thinking Leyland and Screwfix too but this felt different.
