Duck Egg Cafe - North Cross Road

Hi all,

I am utterly disappointed about the customer service that my friends and I received at the Duck Egg Cafe on Friday. We were a small group of mum's with ~15 month old babies, I left first, paid and went home.

An hour later one of my friends called me saying that they were paying and the waitress at the till said that I hadn't paid, and that they had to pay for me. I was very confused as I certainly paid and I could hear voices in the background over the phone arguing about it. So my friend put me through to the waitress and I just couldn't believe how rude she was, she said I did not pay and when I did go through the scenario when I was at the till paying to her she hang up on me.

My friend called me again and said that they didn't want to speak to me and that I'm no longer welcome. I just couldn't believe what just happened so I called the cafe landline to speak to them. The waitress picked the phone up and the first thing she said was "I don't have time to speak to you" I then expressed my disappointment on what they've done and she said that I had paid ?6.45 instead of ?7.45!!! So I said to her that it's horrid to blame their customers for the mistakes they make, I don't know how much it costs what I had and if she charged me that amount then that's what I paid! I offered to go and pay the difference and she said it wan't necessary. But the worst was that they were asking my friend to pay it all!!

I just can't believe how they were. There are ways and ways to talk to people, and as well as lying they were awfully rude! If they would have said that they charged me less, it was a mistake then fine, but nope they went on and on about me having left without paying. She didn't apologise as it was her mistake on charging me less, or the fact that they asked my friends to pay it all, and she just kept saying that I didn't pay the right amount, as if I did it deliberately!!

Well, dreadful, that's all and I am sure people love it there but this was my first time and last time there. It's a shame as I have been living in the area for 7 years and it is not nice to see this type of customer service in our neighbourhood.

Good evening

Unbelievably rude staff

I had my partner and baby son waiting for me

So just wanted to pop in for an iced coffee

Went to the loo to check if they had a baby change and popped out to ask partner

What he wanted

Came back and they were unbelievably obnoxious

I also tried to tell them about the rat

I'd seen that morning outside their cafe

And to warn them about it - this didn't go down well :-/

They were so horrible to me I had to leave

Where upon the shouted 'you're crazy ... You're crazy at me ???

They're crazy for employing such terrible staff ?

I am a regular visitor at the Duck's Egg, normally on a Saturday lunchtime, but also when I'm working from home. I have always found the staff extremely friendly and very polite. Your comments don't sound like they apply to the Duck's Egg and I think it's most unfair that you're calling on people to boycott the Duck's Egg. Infact, I've just come back from there and there was a family with 2 young babies and the staff were most helpful and obliging to their needs.

Sounds like Duck Egg have some problems (I've heard similar issues anecdotally), however, are you sure you've replied to the correct thread?

They don't serve alcohol at all, it being a cafe and all.

Jaypainter was talking about respect for customers, and going on to say...

    • I wonder whether his political epiphany and renaissance will stretch to him using his real name - James Ashworth-McLintock - rather than the more proletarian 'McAsh'. To my mind, the only people who should have self-bestowed mononyms are very talented Brazilian footballers - Pele, Kaka, Ronaldinho - very talented female pop icons - Madonna, Shakira, Sonia - or Russian revolutionaries - Lenin, Stalin, Trotsky. Sonia's greatest hits compilation, 'Greatest Hits', is out now on vinyl & CD through PWL Recordings.
    • Probably more helpful to ask simply whether McCash was affiliated with the Greens before becoming a Labour councillor. Trying to explain your thought process and unravel your fevered imagination (particularly when it comes to local politica) is the kind of thing that might require several years of psychoanalysis.
    • made the mistake of going to megans twice in DV.. would never make that mistake a 3rd time. Ditto I liked Romeo Jones a lot they did lovely soups and sandwiches and coffee too and such loveley staff.
    • Aren't most marxists radical by default...and he was a self proclaimed marxist on his twitter feed for years but deleted it as I suspect it did not sit well at Labour HQ. The big worry for Labour might be that he takes votes away from them (but not enough for him to win a seat) especially as there may be a significant protest vote against them at the national level as they are making such a pig's ear of things. I suspect though Labour are glad to see the back of him - to say he was a thorn in their side is an understatement and his loss of the leadership of the council was clearly part of the purge Labour has been embarking on to rid itself of some of the far-left lunatic fringe that have blighted them for so long. The Greens of course are willingly take any disaffected far-left Labour rejects in the same way Reform are hovvering up the lunatic elements of the Tories. The fact he went in with both barrels on Labour is hardly surprisingly but wonderfully hypocritical of someone who thought they were about to lead a Labour council. My how politicians flip-flop to suit their own personal agenda. How long before he falls out with the Greens...where to then? Why do I think he had an affiliation with the Greens before he became a Labour councillor? Or did I imagine that?
