commuter bike ride to central London August 2nd

Recommended Posts

The Bike train is run by me, my husband Bob and our friend and fellow cyclist Andy Cawdell. There's a picture of us all here. https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/bike-train-to-blackfriars-and-beyond-3/. Harmless, I think.

It's called a train but it goes at about 8mph because I lead it and I'm a slow and steady cyclist. Despite the slow pace the journey to Blackfriars Bridge from Peckham Rye takes only 30 minutes. It's really a very short distance -- I guess 4 miles, doing a swift sum in my head.

About three of those four miles are completely off road -- parks (2), pavement cycle lanes (legal) and the excoriated segregated cycle lanes north of the Elephant. I love them myself. I still haven't got over the feeling of astonishment every time I use them.

The Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it?s OK that they start at the same time.

The starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better.

We get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up

The map is here:

Nota Bene that the bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (surprisingly small amounts accepted). So if that?s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it.

And the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road ? and 130m pushing. No pushing. I?m fine to push when required but it?s not required.

Southwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don?t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don?t and you don?t have to. And everything we do is free. More stuff here https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk

    • Something doesn't quite smell right here and probably it's not  the chicken. Both the OP and TheWeekEnd specifically mention  chicken thigh fillets. TWE purchased £14 worth of chicken thigh fillets and they were thrown away "probably for the third time". £14 equates to around 12 fillets which is a lot. Could some have been frozen after purchase and then thawed? And thawed properly before cooking? TWE has a total of 4 posts of which 3 are on this thread.
    • Thanks to all for the advice, very glad to have this community for these enquiries. Here is how it got resolved in case its useful for anyone in the future: I had ordered some garden waste bags, and when the Veolia person came around I just asked them, and they were more than happy to take it no questions asked. 🙂
    • I keep seeing a thread 'missing cat', but you've been found.  Not sure if all would consider that a good thing.  Not a lot new happening ....  When you back in Blighty?
    • In March Oli and his team did an excellent job of the following work at a property I manage.  1. Completely removing existing broken front path. Covering and securing the void (coal shute) beneath using concrete lintels, waterproof membrane and concrete. Laying a compacted sub-base and new clay pavers. 2. Removing broken fence. Securely installing 6 fence posts and 5 fence panels across the end of the back garden. Base of posts wrapped in plastic  sheath and set in post mix. 3. Removing broken render from terrace steps and cleaning then re-rendering steps where needed and repairing other parts.  4. Jet washing rear patio. I would like to thoroughly recommend him to you for a job done very well at a fair price.
