East Dulwich Road - man searches through wheelie bins

Anyone else seen a man (40ish) going through wheelie bins (green and blue) in East Dulwich Road? He's got one of those shopping bags on wheels - pink flowery pattern on it. Found him rummaging through my neighbours' bins this morning...he left as soon as he saw me/before I could say anything.

Seems very odd.

Should I report it?

It's up to individuals to remain viligent.

These scavengers may be merely looking for things they can sell...

... but may also be looking to steal your I.D.

Shread anything that has your Name , Address, Post code on it.. Bank details. etc.

If you see anyone rumaging make you presence known. They will usually walk away.

Exercise caution about approaching these people.

I also saw two young ladies yesterday on Bellenden Road (Oxenford Street side) rummaging through the bins. They also had the shopping bag on wheels.

I didn't see them take anything but something to be aware of.

There should be nothing of a personal nature in a dustbin, so what is wrong with someone looking through one?

We had this group 2 guys i phoned 101 as need permission do that.police did catch them was told were gang looking id stealing any taking on someones land not permissable

Fine if ask my neighbour spotted 2 ladies doing same also reported via 101 they got description were taking identities.

Did the police come more or less immediately?

Were the people charged with theft, or any other offence?

mrure26... this has all been discussed to death before, but IMO the main problem is when someone comes onto your private property to have a root around. If the bins are on the street then I agree it's a bit different.

this is nothing new & has been discussed on here before, those 2 women have been seen many times before with their trolleys all around ED

There at it in sydenham high street , saw an older lady dressed same as the beggars on high street , with bag on wheels .opening bags of clothes from bins , and kp just leaving all the rubbish on the path

They came in less than 10 minutes wouldnt warrant immediatley as not a 999 situation.

Saw a man today doing the same on Woodvale

A man on our road (near ED Station) on a couple of occasions doing the same. Wearing a yellow council jacket. I think he was just looking for scrap metal etc he can sell, but with a number of break ins on our road, I did challenge him and get his picture.

Mmm, just be vigilant as previously suggested and shred anything with any personal details on.

When jumble sales were all the rage, as a student in a strange town, I remember scouring the local area newspaper for jumble sales in 'posh' areas....I suppose if scavengers flock to East Dulwich, it must be a 'posh area'.

I live in Wood Vale and have just got home to find someone has been going through my green bin this morning.
